In Dead Rising 2 and 3, bashing the undead while partnered up with a buddy was exciting and lead to cooperative zombie-crushing shenanigans. It was almost unfair, pinballing the living dead between your baseball bat hits and your friend’s sword. In Dead Rising 4, Frank West returns to the Willamette Mall in Colorado for another zombie outbreak, but cooperative multiplayer is only present as a separate mode. In a Twitch stream, producer David McAnerin revealed that Capcom wanted to create a 4-player cooperative survival experience that wouldn’t intrude on Frank West’s single player story.
The separate cooperative gameplay tasks players with navigating the undead-filled streets of town while trying to complete various missions. Once daylight wanes, players must retreat to the safehouse to await the morning for another round of survival. Successful play will unlock story bits for the four player characters. Some co-op is better than none, but it sounds like a step back from the modes offered in previous games. At least we can look forward to more wacky in-game outfits based on random Capcom properties.
Dead Rising 4 will launch on Xbox One and Windows 10 on December 6th.
Back in June, Legendary Digital Media announced that they were making a movie based on Dead Rising. Legendary has now revealed the cast as well as the full name of the movie. The film’s title is Dead Rising: Watchtower. Rob Riggle (The Daily Show, 21 Jump Street, The Hangover) will be playing grizzled photojournalist Frank West. Joining Riggle will be Harley Morenstein, Keegan Connor Tracey, and Aleks Paunovic. Contrary to previous rumors, it seems the movie will not just be about Frank West chopping up zombies in a mall while dressed as Mega Man.
Dead Rising: Watchtower takes place during a large-scale zombie outbreak. When a mandatory government vaccine fails to stop the infection from spreading, the four leads must evade infection while also pursuing the root of the epidemic, with all signs pointing to a government conspiracy. Politics, public paranoia, and media coverage play an important role in the story’s narrative.
Zach Lipovsky is directing. Dead Rising: Watchtower will debut on the digital streaming service Crackle.
Frank West and his zombie pals are coming to the big screen. Well, more like whatever screen you have on your phone or tablet, but you get the idea. Variety reports that Legendary Digital Media will be producing a movie based on the Capcom zombie mall survival game. The movie will premiere on Sony’s Crackle digital service, with a later release on other content delivery platforms like DVD and Blu-ray. Although executive producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and writer Tim Carter have begun working on the script, a director has not been picked for the project.
