Qt3 Games Podcast: have iPad, won’t travel

Tom Chick discovers there’s no better way to be flu stricken than with a brand new iPad. And Jason McMaster discovers a game on the Steam sale that he should have played when it came out. Plus, bad news for Bioware, the Torchlight developer’s triumphant smackdown, a minor smorgasbord of boardgames, and what happens in Secret World when you party with McMaster (hint: it involves watching him die a lot).

    “What’s a non-horrible free-to-play game?”

    /clears throat

    ;)

Welcome to the Pad People, Tom! “One of us. One of us.”

I very much enjoyed this week’s Aquaman of the Week segment.

Another data point for sucky superheroes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arm_Fall_Off_Boy

Next to that guy, Aquaman looks pretty good.

Ah, yeah, see, I wasn’t thinking of browser based! I’ve done a lot of Fallen London on my iPad.

I can’t wait for some of the more annoying to set up (Euro) board games to be implemented for the iPad; I hear Agricola is in the works (from Playdek, the guys who ported Summoner Wars). Tom, please give 7 Wonders another shot. I agree that it is difficult to get a handle on it the first time around, with so many unknowns but it is light civ building fun.

We randomly stumbled upon this Korean drama Ghost, on Hulu, about a cyber-police squad. The show has both engaging protagonists and antagonists, and is also surprisingly funny. Highly recommend it.

  • wisdomchild

Oooh, pretty kitty…and accommodating! S/he seems surprisingly nonplussed by the prospect of functioning as an iPad inclination station.

“Cool iPad stand” I thought. “Oh, wait.”

At what point can I resume the podcast to get past the Spec Ops: The Line spoilers? I got about two hours into the game last night and want to preserve the mystery…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-McMaster/607680289 Jason McMaster

I really like 7 Wonders, I just had no idea what was going on! I keep wanting to get it, but I only have 3-4 people that will play local. I can always drive back to Abners, of course

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-McMaster/607680289 Jason McMaster

I think the only spoilers this podcast are, uh, Secret World and a touch of Darkness 2. You’re pretty safe I think

I think Tom cheated, I know Shadow, and that cat, sir, is no Shadow. Mostly because that cat isn’t currently meowing and collapsing like an AT-AT

  • http://twitter.com/luckyghostnyc Seth Berkowitz

You are correct… I am listening to the Guild Wars 2 episode from two weeks ago, it turns out.

    Useless Quiz Time!

Which of these are not Aquaman villains?
    Note: There are 2 answers.
    a) Seaweed Man
    b) Black Manta
    c) King Shark
    d) Namor the Sub-Mariner
    e) Ocean Master

I don’t understand why Jetpack Joyride doesn’t count. I’m not a big fan of it myself, but I thought you guys liked it.

  • Jeckal

Hey Tom, that Secret World quest you were talking about, all you do is jump on top of one of the trucks around the fence and then jump over the fence, you may miss it a couple times, but once you time the jump right, your in.

Not sure if that keypad is a red herring or if the code really is ‘somewhere’ in Blue Mountain.

  • tomchick

I confess I don’t even think of Fallen London as a free-to-play game anymore. It’s just a game, period.

  • tomchick

Holy cats, I didn’t even think of that. Fallen London as an iPad game!

  • tomchick

Um, probably when you’re finished Spec Ops. Eric didn’t spoil the ending specifically, but I definitely egged him on to give away what sound like some pretty cool plot points. You’re definitely going to want to skip about 20 minutes of last week’s Guild Wars 2 podcast to preserve what apparently makes Spec Ops worth playing.

  • tomchick

Seaweed Man. Duh! What do I win?

  • tomchick

I like Jetpack Joyride as a game, but I really dislike its grinding model, which seems all out of proportion with the rewards you get. It’s a bit better with the added gadgets, but I still feel Jetpack Joyride’s game design is too affected by it’s business model.

  • tomchick

No way. You have GOT to be kidding me. I even climbed the cliffs behind the base and tried to jump down into the compound from there.

It’s a matter of climbing a freakin’ truck? Ugh. I really am an idiot.

  • Jeckal

Don’t feel bad! I had to look it up when I was doing the quest.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.edwards.14661 Robert Edwards

There is another that is not an Aquaman villain. No credit for half right.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.edwards.14661 Robert Edwards

If you log in to your Fallen London account on the iPad Safari browser and add the bookmark to the home screen it feels like an iPad app to an extent.

  • http://twitter.com/luckyghostnyc Seth Berkowitz

Cool, I will leave last week’s episode on pause then ’til I’m done. The single player game is very brief I hear. After this, Haze!

As someone who finally got an iPad a few days ago, I know the feeling Tom (well, minus the flu).

Ir’s really an amazing device that stands on its own and is just something else. It’s not a laptop, it’s not a smart phone, it’s not a portable console or a kindle. It’s just there and it fills a void I had never noticed before but now that I know it’s there, I already can’t imagine going back. I’m writing all this as a totally non-Mac guy, my only Apple exposure before being iPods/iPhones.

I’ve rebought a ton of iOS and PC games. I swear, that’s the fifth time I’m buying some popcap games and I wish Bejeweled HD was perfectly on par with Bejeweled 3.

Regarding Magic 2013, that was the first game I bought for my iPad and I’ve kind of buried myself in a corner here: I already owned it on Steam and Xbox. I hope in a near future, developers and publishers will push for crossplatform saves. I’m not even asking for crossplay, just keeping my progress from one device to the next. Hell, I’m asking because I’m willing to buy their game multiple times.

Next step: let’s see how Zen Pinball holds on the iPad. It was pretty underwhelming on my phone but I have high hopes that fake plastic snake from Excalibur will look awesome. I know, it’s not a snake, it’s supposed to be a dog, somehow.

  • tomchick

I absolutely cannot abide pinball games on the iPhone or iPad. :( I need some sort of tactile feedback for the flippers. Having to hover my fingers over the touchpad just doesn’t cut it. The tables certainly look great, and it’s a real boon having a vertical display better suited to a pinball table. But the lack of an actual bona fide button just kills it for me.

The worst idea I ever came up with for a hero in supers pen-and-paper RPGs was Wereficus, who turns into a ficus tree in the light of the full moon. I think a Letterman top-ten also introduced the character Cornman, with the ability to talk to corn.

I’m shocked, shocked to find a baseball reference from the noted sports agnostic Mr. Chick in this podcast.

  • Mike Cathcart

“I guarantee you Superman can talk to damn fish.”

  • Jonathan Wood

That was a lot of fun – I really enjoyed listening to this
