Qt3 Podcast: Greg Kasavin and Bastion

If you haven’t finished Bastion, you can listen up to the 37-minute mark, at which point we’ll warn you that we’re about to talk spoilers. Then you should bail and finish playing it. If you have finished Bastion, you can safely listen to this entire podcast in which Bastion writer Greg Kasavin goes into detail about how one of this year’s finest games came to be.

I feel like every Kasavin mention should have this attached:

Really enjoy the writing in Bastion, Greg. Great game

I was struck by your comment about fighting women toward the end of the game, mainly because it didn’t make me uncomfortable at all. It scarcely registered, in fact. The Ura are heavily anime inspired (the whole game draws on Japanese influences in its art style), and in a lot of anime, the armies/fighting groups are multi-gendered. So it seemed perfectly natural to me. Do you feel uncomfortable fighting female characters in, say, Final Fantasy Tactics?

That’s an excellent question, Miss Yellow. I guess it has to do with meeting so few human characters in Bastion. The fact that you end up fighting other humans is a bit of a twist. So I was a bit surprised that so many of the soldiers were women in a world that had such a conspicuous shortage of people.

But you raise a good point. It doesn’t occur to me at all that I’m slaying female warriors in something like Diablo or Sacred. Why did it jump out at me in Bastion? Is it some weird subconscious awarness of there being so few people, so women are more important? Is it some parochial Southerner thing I’ve got going? Is it because you play Bastion for so long without hearing a woman’s voice? The third opera in Wagner’s Ring cycle is famous for going on for hours before you hear a woman singing, which is unheard of in opera. Maybe it’s like that. Anyway, you’ve called me out and I’m afraid I got nothing. :)

It’s Mr Yellow, not that it matters.

GY works fine. Otherwise it sounds like I should be in Reservoir Dogs.

Am having surgery in a couple of weeks, and am saving Bastion for my recovery. I practically can’t wait for the surgery!
