Wallet threat level: ancient China and a burrow

Quite a busy week in the realm of AAA releases and ports. There’s a new Lumines release. A Sacred 2 Remaster. A Fallout 4 anniversary release. A new Anno game! (I’m still yet to actually play one of those myself, but I do still get excited about each one myself for some reason). Sega is porting Yakuza 1 and 2’s remasters to Switch 2. Square Enix is porting Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 to Xbox. A new Call of Duty is coming out! And one of those big action-adventure Chinese games we’ve been seeing trailers for is finally coming out: Where Winds Meet.

I had to look up the word Wuxia after reading the description for that one. “Wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists in ancient China.” Ah I see! Well, this one is described as open world, so that makes this different from the other big recent Chinese releases, so I’ll keep a wary eye on that one, it could be interesting.

My own personal interests perk up this week for three games. The third most interesting is Rennsport, a racing game that seems to want in on the already crowded genre of racing around the racing tracks with realistic physics. I’m kind of curious since this one has several tracks that I’ve never raced on before in racing games.

Next there’s an immersive sim that gives me System Shock 2 vibes. Act One of Ambrosia Sky is out today, and has us exploring an asteroid colony where disaster has struck. For the longest time it felt like immersive sims were only restricted to places where people had already died or moved on from. I was anticipating the time when technology allowed us to go past that restriction. But in recent years I’ve resigned myself to the fact that maybe the lone survivor / haunted house scenario is just one of the most interesting scenarios one can have in gaming, and not just because of technology restrictions but just because it makes for a great narrative and atmosphere.

Most exciting to me is the little game called Winter Burrow. The art and gameplay in the trailers reminds me of Don’t Starve, but with a little mouse as the protagonist. And this game seems cozier and more friendly than Don’t Starve. I loved that game, but in the end I think I was able to discover only 5% of its content. Fingers crossed that Winter Burrow will actually let me discover more!
