|Vanguard: the voyage|

The folks at Sigil have been doing their official media unveiling thing for Vanguard. I ended up getting sucked into it when an editor asked if I would be willing to drive to Calabasas for a day-long demo. I figured, yeah, sure, Calabasas is about a half hour from my house. Why not?
Only he actually asked if I would be willing to drive to Carlsbad. Since I'm not very bright, I just skim words for their general sort of shape and sound. So when I saw the word 'Carlsbad' -- which meant nothing to me since I've never been there and don't know the first thing about it except that I think they have a cavern down there -- I substituted the word 'Calabasas', where I have been.
Imagine my surprise when I realized I'd volunteered to drive three hours south through some of LA's worst traffic to the outskirts of San Diego. Which is, like, a whole other city!
Anyway, I am intrigued by Vanguard since what I tend to dig in MMOs is the whole idea of co-op tactical combat with buddies. With its detailed combat, Vanguard might be just the thing to keep me from getting sucked back into World of Warcraft. Soloing only holds my interest for so long before I realize I could be playing Civ IV or Chibi-Robo or maybe finding out what that Marc Ecko thing is supposed to be.
Here's my Avault length preview of Vanguard, and as if that wasn't enough, here's a verbatim transcript of parts of my interview with Jeff Butler and Brad McQuaid, the guys from EverQuest who co-founded Sigil and who have quite a bit to say about how single player gaming is dead. Although not exactly in those words.
