As long as there’s nothing lousy about it to bring it down, one factor can carry the day. In playing The Minty Green Factory Part 1, that one thing is the bubble hat (pictured).

It’s just a goofy little touch. Your sackdude puts on the helmet–or, to put it more accurately, he runs by the helmet and it gets put on him–and then he proceeds to shoot bubbles out of his head, one at a time. He looks at the bubble, wondering what to do about it. Is he supposed to float on–POP. Drop. Nope. Not supposed to float on it. Hmm. He realizes he probably has to get up to that higher platform over there to the right, the one with the save portal and the spermy designs on it. A lightbulb goes on. Steps! Of course! He shoots another bubble and jumps to it. Yep, it holds him. So all he has to do is–POP. Drop. Apparently only holds him for a few seconds. Back to the first platform to try again. He works faster this time. Bubble. Jump. Bubble. Jump. In no time he’s built his first bubble staircase.

Just a simple little discovery, but so pleasing.

Speaking of discovery…

After the jump, a trainer in training

“I’m glad you two are playing…blah blah blah garble garble.”

I shut off the kitchen faucet. It’s taken to making this high-pitched whistling noise whenever we turn it on. I figure there’s some little mineral deposit/pebble caught in the filter thingy. I should grab my pliers and unscrew the cap and clean it out. Probably take me all of five minutes. I know this. Five minutes and I wouldn’t have to turn off the water every time I want to have a conversation while I’m doing the dishes. Meh, I’ll get around to it. We’ve only been dealing with it for about eight months. What’s the hurry?

“Sorry?”

Her eyes go to the faucet and then snap up to me. Her eyebrows rise.

“I know, I know.”

She shakes her head, resigned. “I said, I’m glad you two are playing your DS together so much these days, you know?”

“Yeah,” I reply without thinking. “Me too.” Then I flick the faucet back on. Her meeting starts in a few minutes and I want to be out in my office before people get here and I get snagged in the small-talk net.

A millisecond later my brain actually processes what she said and I flick the water back off.

“Wait…what?”

The smile on my wife’s face tells me she knew I hadn’t really listened to her comment before replying, but it also says she doesn’t really mind. I am, after all, cleaning up the kitchen in advance of her little meeting.

“I said, again, that I’m happy you two are playing the DS so much right now. I think it’s good.”

She makes her way through the dining room over to the reading chair. It’s a big chair-and-a-half that’s perfect for two adult-sized people and one kid-sized person to share. We took to calling it the reading chair when our son was born and we’d sit and read to him on it before bed. Right now, however, he’s converted it into the Pokemon chair, having arranged his multitude of Pokemon cards all over the cushions, the arms, the pillows, and the ottoman. My wife starts to gather them into a stack and two things happen to me. First, I see what got her on this train of thought. Second, I cringe at how he’s going to react when he gets home from his playdate later to find his careful arrangement decimated.

She looks at me through the kitchen pass-through window. “You know?”

I try to keep from furrowing my brow. My sarcasm detector reads zero, registering her current tone as Sincere. I’m confused. Just a couple of weeks ago we bought him his first deck of Pokemon cards and she seemed annoyed with me at this development. Amused, yes, but still a little annoyed. It was me playing Pokemon White that finally nudged our six-year old from Bionicle building to card collecting. She was cool with Bionicle building. It involved some measure of creativity and getting-things-doneness. The cards seem to involve neither of those things and, in addition, are wholly inscrutable to her.

“Not really. No,” I say finally, matching her tone.

Having swept the cards into a pile she starts to neaten them into a single stack. Without attending to the way he had categorized them at all, I note. The Grass Types will be shot-through with Psychics and Waters. She’s also sticking the Energy cards in willy-nilly, which is going to drive him crazy. Ugh. I really should have done that myself before she got to it.

“I just think it’s good,” she continues. “I mean, I don’t want him playing video games all the time, but I like that it’s a bonding thing for you two. Not that you need a bonding thing, of course.” This comes out as if negating a possible offence, which I find amusing. “It’s good for him to get some experience in that. All his friends are into those games, and it’s nice for him to get it a little bit. Without it being all the time. You know?”

“I think so.”

“It’s just…” she squares the corners on the now homogenized stack of cards. “I just don’t want him to be the one kid among his friends who knows nothing about games. And you’re good at them, so it’s nice that he wants to do it with you.”

She smiles and heads to his room with the Pokemon cards. “Yeah,” I say, smiling myself as the you’re good at them resonates in my head. “As if,” I say under my breath, flicking the faucet back on and getting on with rinsing.

I consider the past week, every day of which has involved him asking me, as he wakes me up, kisses me goodbye and heads off to summer school/camp with his mom, “Dad, can we play your DS today?” It’s sweet the way he asks it. Sotto voce so that Mom can’t quite hear. Conspiratorial. Every day I groggily reply in the affirmative. And every day when I pick him up he repeats the question first thing upon greeting me. Then we head home and set about leveling up our team, which currently consists of Pignite, Zebstrika, Palpitoad, Munna, Boldore, and Throh.

I use the possessive ‘our’ in that last sentence on purpose. After finishing my last Pokemon White game diary entry, I pretty much dropped the game. Now that my boy is interested in it, my interest is rekindled but only as it involves him. I don’t play the game without him, and he is not at all interested in playing it without me. I’ve offered to let him start a new game and build a new team of his own. Not interested. I’ve offered to let him take the stylus and throw the moves himself. Not interested. He just wants to call the shots while sitting on my lap or climbing on my back or huddling next to me at the table. I’ve said here before, quite a few times, that my kid hasn’t really been interested in video games. I’ve wondered, marveled really, at how my friends’ kids got to be so into games. I have one friend in particular who gets to play Rock Band with his daughter all the time. I couldn’t get my boy into that at all, no matter how many times I tried. But now, this week, I see us turning the corner. He’s starting to get it.

It’s our thing. And it’s cool. For the most part.

At first I got a little frustrated, truth be told, because he didn’t get how important leveling is. I cannot really blame him for this. Where we are in the game, just about to face another gym leader, calls for a lot of grinding to get our team ready for that confrontation. I learned that lesson the hard way when I faced my first gym leader and got my ass handed to me. Just thoroughly dismantled. Now when I go into a gym I make sure my team is over prepared, leveled slightly above what is strictly necessary. This requires a good deal of grinding as we go through the grasses and root out wild Pokemons, which often means we are battling the same wild Pokemons over and over again. This is boring enough for an adult.

It’s beyond boring for my six-year old. It is essentially meaningless. He couldn’t care less about leveling. All he wants to do is collect. He’s got a couple of decks of cards now, so his interest lies in going after wild Pokemons and capturing them to add them to our Pokedex, which is basically an electronic notebook we carry around with us as we travel through the cities of Pokemon White. He loves capturing new ones, something I quit doing a long time ago because capturing them gives you no XP, and thus doesn’t contribute to leveling in any way. His insistence on capturing every wild Pokemon we met meant our leveling basically ground to a halt for a time.

Luckily, after we captured all the different types of Pokemons our current city had to offer, he became okay with some of the drudgery of grinding to level up. I think this was due in part to our previous gym leader battle. After defeating that dude we received a gym badge. When he saw that click into place in our little gym badge holder with a satisfying metallic clang, he became most pleased. Again with the collecting.

“When do we get another one of those?” He asked, noting the empty slots next to our new badge.

“Next time we defeat a gym leader.”

“Then let’s go!”

“It means we have to spend a lot more time leveling up the team.” I said this with that parental note of caution in my voice, a note that carries with it an implied which you may not like.

He considered this for barely a moment before declaring, “Let’s do it!”

Turning the corner, I tell you. On to the next city, and the glories of vict–

“Garble garble blah blah blah…you hear me?”

I look up from the dishes, startled out of my thoughts. I see my wife before me and flick off the screaming faucet. “Huh?”

“The meeting. They’re here.”

I look out the front door and see folks getting out of a couple of cars.

“Will you be able to pick him up from the playdate in a bit?”

“Sure,” I say. “He’s expecting me to. We’re going up against Gym Leader Clay this afternoon.”

“Uh-huh.” She smiles again and heads for the door, switching to greeting mode.

I dry my hands, go over to the power strip hidden in the corner, and make sure the DS is plugged in, knowing what his first question will be when I pick him up. I wonder if she knows she’s creating a monster. Or rather…two.

She’ll know soon enough.

Click here for the previous Weekly Little Big Planet

[12

post-7871","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-features

Weekly Little Big Planet: leveler vs. collector...FIGHT!
