Having played a few minutes more than a realworld day, as an election-night pundit might say after taking up the first round of reports from fair Pennsylvania’s polls: “I’ve seen enough.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

From these final ten hours, I can’t say my opinion has changed much since the first ten hours<\/a>. Changed some, ever so slightly for the better, perhaps. But not much. And certainly not enough to see me through to whatever final boss battle squats ten hours hence. The cutscenes intimate it’ll be a boss I’ve already fought — and beaten — twice. Isn’t best two out of three a win in any contest among civilized combatants? Thus ends my time, unfinished but for me more-than-sufficient and all-too-ample, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have learned a little about myself, slightly less about the members of expedition 33, their secret histories and unavowed destinies now unfurled and proclaimed. I have learned that what I enjoy in JRPGs is the slow ladling in of systemwork among the churning batter of playfully nonsensical Japanese storytelling, invariably animated and often anime-esque, starring as they do schoolboys with low-poly-count coiffures. That tumble of churning batter is just the mortar, nothing more than congealant for the systems, which are the cerebral candy, the closest claim to edification or nourishment, nuggets to be toothed, gnawed, and ultimately digested. The gameplay’s the thing, some bard might have said had plays been interactive, and built on systems instead of human experiences (“Now press, my lord, thy shoulder button left, to ‘quip the fatal venom’s vial…<\/em>“).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Clair Obscur inverts the recipe. It’s story first, often, and oh-so-foremost. Convoluted, bloated, relentlessly morose, full of high sentence and more than a bit obtuse, offering buckets, baths, generous troughs of not much at all, but even then awfully heavy on the grief. Grief, mystery, grief and moping, more grief, mystery, a touch of awkward flirty mischief where the romancing would go, grief, more mystery, some grief, someone loses heart and is encouraged by someone else (a common refrain), more grief. A piano tinkles obviously. An ethereal voice drapes her gossamer choiring over the twee glum drama of it all. An accordion occasionally wheedles at us to remember France. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Credit where credit’s deserved, I was quite taken with Syrene’s lair, a dungeon of fabrics and dancing desert djinnis, where tricks of scale are adroitly performed. But that was so long ago. That was levels and levels before the interminable iteration inside the monument. It all seems so distant, like something from another game entirely. Within the monument, I had meant to pause at 20 hours, but there seemed to be an end in sight. Not quite, I found. As I had no idea how endless a monument it was, well, so much for tidy tens of hours. And then that last fight. I came within a hair’s breadth of having to replay the whole damn thing. I’ve no heart, stomach, nor care to carry on. I can but say I persisted long enough to see Act III.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I disliked these second ten hours somewhat less than the first ten hours because Clair Obscur’s second act allows itself a scant few more systems to interrupt the story. Not many and not by much. Collecting legs for Monoco’s skills, gradient attacks and reactions (blast it, I could never get the hang of the latter!), a couple of additional characters, the occasional side level challenge, and I suppose if I wanted I could look for the other eight gestrals. I don’t. But Clair Obscur’s meringue second act cannot compare to the 10th and 20th hours of the crunchier JRPGs I’ve enjoyed, steadfastly ignorant to the slopping tumbling batter’y swirl of who’s doing what to whom on account of which secret destiny to recover\/smite\/reveal the doo-dad of ultimate evil\/holiness\/inscrutability, erupting into an orgy of colored light spewing from eyes and fingertips and swords to resolve the resolution of whatsoever will ensue. Instead, the story’s the thing in this JRPG. Although Clair Obscur is perfectly willing to lean into the latter half of its appellation, I’m not so much confused as uninterested. Consider me detached and adrift, a rogue planet, heedless of the intended gravity. Beyond it all, frankly. Lost to it and vice versa vis-a-vis Verso et al. Each cutscene lessons me beyond caring, each breathily intoned line of dialogue winds me farther asea, each tenderly puppet-to-puppet touch a reminder I have stumbled into the wrong room, my eyes rolling for the nearest exit with each meaningfully animated melancholy glance. I am not for this place, these mouthing dollies, this sprawlingly intimated epic, as earnest and unselfaware as any Resident Evil, as pregnant with self-referential and even self-reverential import as any Final Fantasy, as narratively frayed and shabbily told as Kojima at his most callow. Clair Obsur is a triumph of the Japanese storytelling milieu, crewed by its young adult dramatis<\/em> Persona<\/em>, its declaration of hegemony over an entire genre. Sandfall Interactive can but prick the surface with little flags here and there, their hopelessly modest French attempts to claim, to colonize, to culturally appropriate a genre beyond their Continental grasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s symbolic,” Luna declares from behind her latest dirtied post-combat Unreal mask, a thesis delivered after the finale, but before the Epilogue. Another prologue, if you must know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Let’s go home,” says the Frenchest of them all. And, of course, no such thing happens because there are acts and hairstyle palettes untold, hours yet to while for those who care to while them. Alas, I am no such one. What’s this today, Xenoblade Chronicles X on Amazon at the lowest price it’s ever been? How fortuitous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
