A new Kirby Air Ride game arrives this week, along with a couple of exciting remasters, a few potentially cool indies, and some VR games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start with the remasters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

R-Type Delta was the fourth R-Type game and the first 3D game in the series, and came out of the original PlayStation. Now the shoot ’em up is being remastered for a new release. Similarly, Outlaws was a Lucasarts first person shooter set in the old West. It was possibly the first game that let you reload your weapons by pressing a button. I\u2019m actually looking forward to checking out this remaster. I did briefly try Outlaws about 10 years after release, but couldn\u2019t get too far into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirby Air Riders is the big release by Nintendo. From all the previews it looks way too complicated to me with its multiplayer modes. In that regard, it reminds me of Smash Brothers games, which seem designed to be simple enough for kids, but with incredible complexity under that veneer. Except in the promotional material for this one (the multiple Nintendo Directs), Nintendo seems to be advertising only the complexity, not the simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The indie games, as usual, seem to have potential. Just have a look at the descriptions below and you\u2019ll see what I mean. News Tower\u2019s description really<\/em> appeals to me since I just got done reading Robert Caro\u2019s The Power Broker, and what really struck me the most about 1909-1974 era New York City that\u2019s different from today is the huge amount of daily newspapers in the city. And not just the number of individual newspapers, but their morning, afternoon, and evening editions. How\u2019s that for a thriving press? Unfortunately, News Tower’s particular type of management sub-genre seems limiting and not the kind of game I\u2019d want to see about the newspaper business in NYC in the 30s. But hopefully it\u2019s still really cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
