Tom, this is really picking a nit, but in Archimedean Dynasty the player character's full name was Emerald "Dead Eye" Flint.

See http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/apr97/arch.html

Perhaps Tom was making a joke about Samantha Flint, the former PR head at Blue Byte?

No such luck. Tom was genuinely confused. It's fixed now. Sorta.

I still think 'Emerald' is a dopey name for a male hero. It's not a far stretch from Ruby, Jewel, or Jade...

Heh, "Emerald" is a sissified-sounding name alright. The Massive guys were German I think. I wonder if "Emerald" sounds more macho in German?

Actually, he was an AMWAY salesman. He was tooling around in his submarine, trying to show people "the circles", and he made Emerald. Of course, he's a loner because nobody will talk to him anymore.

Note- only people with friends in AMWAY will get the joke here.

Aszurom, the trouble is, as you point out, once they show you "the circles" they're no longer your friends.

German words never sound femanine, but they can sound gay.

If I was going to name my male protagonist/hero after a rock I definitely wouldn't pick any birth stones. I'd go with something cool and manly like Pumis, fear the floating rock! Or Lime, all the better to embalm you with!

Usually, you have to pick an igneous rock for a male hero's name. Flint, Granite, etc. I will admit Scoria sounds feminine (or like a former RPG columnist). I've always been partial to Gabbro Xenolith.

According to Babelfish, Emerald is "Smaragd" in German. More masculine? Perhaps. More Tolkienesque? Certainly.

I like obsidian cause you can cut yourself with it and not even notice! Igneous is certainly the coolest classification of rock 'cause, you know, it used to be lava! All molten and cool...

As a speaker of a german language (though it's
Swedish) I think I'm qualified enough to say that
Smaragd(it's the same in Swedish and German) is
not a very masculine word.
Gabbro Xenolith.. I really like that =)
