The part of Talonsoft's announcement that caught my eye was "Merchant Prince 2." I've never heard of "Merchant Prince 1," but I did play "Machiavelli: The Prince" -- also developed by Holistic (published by Microprose) and definitely the same kind of game. Does anyone know if MP2 is essentially Machiavelli 2? If it is, I will put in an early (tentative) recommendation for it. Machiavelli was quite a fine game. I don't know any other games that let you bribe Cardinals or assassinate the Pope!

Machiavelli was essentially a re-release of Merchant Prince. Both were developed by Holistic, but Machiavelli was published by Microprose and Merchant Prince was published by the late great QQP. From what I can tell from the screenshots, Merchant Prince 2 seems to have almost the exact same mechanics as the previous games.
However, I'm all for a remake. There does seem to be a tactical combat screen in MP2, but it looks like it's for display purposes only.

Is the art in MP2 much of an update from the previous game? Is this just a glorified Windows port?
