Here is another good review of Operation Flashpoint :

Interesting about the mod projects mentioned. I thought Bohemia Int. was still on the bubble about how much leeway it wanted to give modders but it sounds like they plan to give full SDKs to the modders once they've got the North American version done (or thereabouts).

I'm sure they want to give as much as possible to allow for mods. An SDK probably wont be seen until a few months after US release, my guess around before xmas... though i think they will be giving some pre-sdk like kits (for graphics n terrain) for the serious modders. they would be foolish to not giv
One mod that sounds cool is the Vietnam mod. OFP fits the Vietnam War perfectly since it didnt have large scale engagments like WW2 or Korea (except on a few occasions). Though i think with a ww2 mod, it would be cool to have some attack aircraft... like a p-47, stuka or a yak2. since the engine really isnt designed for jet fighter aircraft, world war 2 aircraft might actually be better than vietnam aircraft. I can't see players flying an F-4 Phantom... the islands would be flown over in less than 5 seconds with vietnam-era jets...unless they are flying a-4's or sumtin.
anyway...
etc

One strange mod idea is the Great War (WWI) mod. Well, strange to me, I'm just not sure how much fun (from a gamer's standpoint) it would be to go from trench to trench. :)

I think the Great War mod is being done by a very young person (14 years old maybe?) so I'm not real optimistic about that one (not that I don't think he's competent, but girls will probably start kicking his ass soon). I think the Nam one will be great if our computers can handle a lot of jungle scenery. Wouldn't a WWII island hopping campaign be perfect for a mod? The islands are already built. I want to drive my PT Boat around the Island!

Yeah I was gonna say, the Pacific theater's constantly ignored in games it seems (of late anyway). I guess Commandos 2 has a few Pacific theater missions.

I miss Big Time Software's planned Whistling Death, which was supposed to be Over the Reich done in the Pacific Theater. But something called Combat Mission and its 29 sequels has pushed it aside. ;-)

Are you having any luck saving your game in the demo? I always have to start back at the briefing area and I just don't feel like playing all the way back to the battle. I wish I could stay alive long enough to reach a beach. :)

In the real game there is a time compression mode that helps with the boring sections. Can't remember what key does it but check out the controls section.

I finally "broke through" on the demo -- got the hang of shooting onceI realized this wasn't SWAT 3 and I needed to fire looong before I see the whites of their eyes. :) I think by the last time I played tonight I'd done most of the soldier offing myself, which seemed to help keep most of my squad alive for a change. :)
In an earlier session our squad was whittled down to the commanding officer with me and a M60 on its last magazine.
The menu item lableed REVERT or REPLAY is actually what we'd normally consider "game loading" (loads the most recent auto-save), and the LOADING thing I was using was actually more of a "start over" thing.
I loved the ending of the demo -- it's a lot more exciting than just a beachhead retreat. :) Now I'm just impatient that it hasn't arrived yet, maybe tomorrow.
One problem I'm having is that my MS mouse has a smooth mousewheel and my sweaty gameplaying fingers have trouble rolling it to select items. You can use the bracket keys to choose instead, but I constantly forget that in the heat of the action.

I remember one time I played that mission and missed the evacuation. As I stood there scratching my head watching my troops fly away in the Blackhawk I saw a T-72 shoot down the Blackhawk. I could see it falling and the bodies of my men falling out hitting the ground. I ran over to see if anyone was still alive but no one was. So I grabbed some ammo from my fallen comrades and went back to town to seek some revenge.
I took out as many of them as I could but in the end they surrounded me with the obvious result. :-) Great mission !

You can actually win the demo mission. Its possible to take Houdan all by yourself. Its kind of rewarding too!
BTW, the recent 1.1 patch makes enemy soldiers much more effective at detecting you during the day. Its somewhat harder now.
Also, one key aspect of OFP gameplay is concealmeant and cover. one you cant be seen as much but can be shot easier (bushes), the other you can be seen but harder to shoot at (trees). Also for the demo dont forget the demo missions... you can almost play a whole game alone with the demo missions... though you'll be missing a lot of cool ass weapons from the full version.
"In that case, they need to throw in the A-1 Skyraider" Oh yeah, that plane would be great in a vietnam mod... also, a WW1 mod, appealing to those who like to die wholesale. will they even be adding Biological agents into the mod? anyway, i hear its mainly a multiplayer mod. BTW, is it really being done by a 14 year old?
etc

About my trouble with the demo mission: I made it to the helicopter, but then I got shot by AA fire... I don't want to have to replay the whole thing just because of that, but there's nothing that I can about anything once I'm onboard.
Am I missing something, or is getting through that part just a matter of luck?
By Matthew B on Saturday, August 4, 2001 - 12:00 am:
IIRC, (been awhile since I played the demo and haven't gotten the import full version yet)getting shot down in the helicopter was scripted - at least I assume it was. Then again, the actual mission seemed pretty dynamic... But anyway, it seemed as if they were just shooting you down to set up the scenario for the next mission and give the demo a cliffhanger feel.
