Hey,
First time poster/long time reader here.
I was wondering if anyone had a vast store of knowledge -or knew of where to find an article about- laptop computer video card options.
It seems really confusing to me now. I don't know what to get and if it'd be good enough for my hardcore gaming needs (I AM UNREAL TOURNEY!!!!!).
I suppose you all could give me anecdotes but what I'm really searching for is an article or website that would have current info on this. Anyone know of an article like that??
Google and Lycos are yielding too many shopping places and way too many 3 year old articles LOL!!!
Thanks!

There's only 2 laptop video cards currently available that are even decent for games that require, or strongly recommend, 3D hardware acceleration. By far the best laptop video card is the Nvidia Geforce 2Go - it's a slightly pared down (for heat reasons) version of the Geforce 2 card, but it's more than adequate for 3D gaming. Laptops from both Dell and Toshiba currently offer Geforce2Go setups -- it'll be hard to find the card from another manufacturer.
The only other card that's decent for 3D gaming is the ATI Rage Pro 16MB (there's also an inferior, 8MB version). It's significantly worse than the Geforce2Go, but still decent, and capable of running games like Unreal Tournament well, but it won't be particularly good at running more demanding games like Giants.

What Stefan said...
I've owned a Dell notebook (1 Gig) with both a Geforce 2GO and an ATI Rage Pro, everything else the same. The difference in games is pretty significant. If you want to game on your notebook, definitely get a system with the GF2GO.

What both of them said. GeForce2 Go should really be the only video card a gamer will consider in their laptop. The others will handle SOME 3D games okay and the 2D stuff just fine, but a GF2 Go is essentially a GeForce2 MX, which is like twice as fast and feature-complete as the next laptop video card.
I only wish someone offered it on an Athlon 4 system.

Most of the Athlon laptops that I've seen are being marketed as budget laptops. And you gotta admit, those Athlons are a pretty good value. Still, a high-end Athlon-based laptop would not be amiss...

How much more does it cost for the GF2Go over another video card? I wouldn't think that it would be more than $100-$200 more, and in the course of a laptop, that's not a whole lot.

I'm a bit late to this party but you might want to check out Bedfordmags's LAPTOP Magazine. Archives here:

PS: Go with an NVidiaGo... but honestly I don't understand why anyone would want to UT on a laptop (assuming they have a desktop system too). What I want in a Laptop is LESS weight.
