What is Anachronox?

QuarterToThree Message Boards: Free for all: What is Anachronox?

I read that Anachronox went gold today and will be in stores later this month. I have read a few previews of the game, but don't have a solid grasp of how the game actually plays. I know it uses the Quake II engine and it is an RPG where you can manage a group of several characters.

My questions:

Is this game similar to Deus Ex but allows you to use several characters?

Is it an "action" RPG?

Is it a Balder's Gate 2-type of RPG but from a first/third person perspective?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

It would probably be most appropriate to compare it to a Final Fantasy game, but with in-engine cut scenes instead of FMV.

It's very different thematically, but the overall RPG style is the same. It's quite different from either the Baldur's Gate/Pool of Radiance/Fallout style RPG or the Deus Ex/System Shock style action RPG.

>Is this game similar to Deus Ex but allows you to use several characters?

No. It's not as open-ended or non-linear. It's closer in style to a console RPG.

>Is it an "action" RPG?

No. Less so than even Deus Ex or System Shock 2. Combat is turn-based (although you have a limited amount of time to take your turn, like in the Final Fantasy games).

>Is it a Balder's Gate 2-type of RPG but from a first/third person perspective?

Very, very different for BG2, in my opinion. More linear (less choices about where to go and what to do) -- closer examples would be console RPGs (final Fantasy, Chronotrigger) or on the PC, Vampire - The Masquerade: Redemption.

Thanks for the posts. After I posted my original questions, I visted Gamespot.com to read their last preview of the game. Their preview mentioned Final Fantasy and the similarity to console RPGs also. After reading the article, I remembered why the gameplay wasn't clicking with me - I haven't played a console game since the glory days of the Atari 2600! I guess I'll have to check out the Anachronox demo to see if that type of game appeals to me.

If anachronox can capture the feel of a good console rpg, im all for it... though based on some previews ive seen for it, im not sure. The graphics look too dark for a "consolish" rpg. And I've heard the game length was cut severely of what was intended. supposedly its not more than a week of gaming...as long as Summoner (too short for an rpg imo) I suppose... 30 hours gaemplay i guess...

But ill prolly buy it since theres not much in non expansion rpgs coming out this summer.

etc
