Read this from Mark Asher's Game Spin: "So why do I keep playing? I think there are a couple of reasons. First, I know the game inside and out. Kohan will require me to learn a new interface, new rules, and so on. So often if I sit down in the evening for some just-for-fun gaming after the kids are in bed, I gravitate towards something I can play immediately without having learn the ropes. EverQuest is a cinch in this case. I can log on and be letting blood within a couple of minutes. Another reason is undoubtedly the multiplayer aspect. Computer controlled wandering monsters aren't really all that exciting, but other players are unpredictable and often funny. "
Its about Everquest but its also clearly states why I play TFC/CS everynight instead of the dozen or so other games sitting next to my computer. Anyone else do that? Play a game beyond its time just because?

This old Bundesliga (German pro soccer league) Manager game from 1990. Crummy graphics, but it's fun as hell. I had played it when I lived in Germany a long time ago, and I recently found it on some website... been playing it steadily ever since.

On the EQ comment. The fact that I couldn't log on and just start bloodletting as a level 40 wizard made me quit the game after 10 months of playing. The 30+ minutes calling for a party, the 2 over camped high level dungeons where experience and items were difficult to come by, and the lack of an ability to solo (except for a few select classes) were all contributing factors. Of course the fact you had to play it for hours on end to actually get anywhere didn't help either.
I do play CS quite a bit but that IS instant gratification and can be played for a half and hour or an hour without a problem.

Starcraft is still one of my "Just because I have a spare hour" games. I start up a 2 computers vrs 1 human scirmish game and go to town. I do the same with Sacrifice, but it's still new enough that I'm not playing it "past its time".

If I do this, it's with Warcraft II. Usually my time with this game is spent against human opponents, but ocasionally I indulge...
