I really like the content you guys have here and the discussions in the message boards are interesting as well. However navigating this site is extremely frustrating. There is no easy way to comment on each story and determining which threads are active is neigh impossible. I know for a fact I would visit here more often if the boards were not so frustrating to use.

Please consider using UBB or something else similar. Thanks.

Xaroc, if you click "Last Day" it will only display the messages that have been posted to in the last 24 hours. That helps to see which threads are active, and which are not.

Thanks for the advice. That does make it better although I still want to be able to comment on every story with a simple link from the story. I am just never happy. :)

They used to do that. Sometimes they still do. That not the board's fault, though. What's up with that, Mark? How come you don't have links to the message board from articles any more?

There were bi-lines for about two days, too. They're gone now, too.

That's because Mark still doesn't understand the virtues of a database-driven site where all that stuff is done for you automatically. Instead of manually, like the monks in 14th century monasteries used to do it.

I know, I know, paper sucks, parchment rules. Some people are still afraid of typewriters, I hear.

I have to do them manually, so I don't do them that often. Most news stories probably aren't going to generate comments, so if I set up a link I'm just wasting my time and creating a dead topic for the message board.

Anyone is free to read a story and start a topic about it. The board is open and essentially unmoderated, although I am All Powerful. The only moderating I've done is take some idiot's messages and de-HTML-ize them. He made the text giant and in flaming colors as part of his deliberate trolling. I left the stupid messages up, but made them a wee bit less irritating.

UBB has a bad rep as far as being a resource hog. We won't go to that. I think this board works fine.

Anyway, I'll try to put up a few more links from the front page.

With broadband, I like them. In my 56k dial-up days, I hated them.

I still like Usenet, but it seems to be dying. I remember when strategic used to get 500 posts a day. Now it seems to get about 150.

yes, the newsgroups have seemed to devolve into just "getting hints" for the most recent game.

all i see from the comp sys rpg group is BG2 hints! im tired of that game (albeit a very good game).

the msg boards are good here (i also get ALL the messages in email! alrdy haev like 500+ Qt3 messages in folder!). i like all my info in one spot since im on dial up at home :-(.

btw, this mb gets good discussions going in a variety of topics. . . i like this mb. . . its my hero. Plus the guest appearances from developers too!

etc

I haven't spent a lot of time of message boards in the past, but I love this one. I spend a lot time here. Basically, the whole day that I'm at work, I come here a lot. (Don't get online much at home -- hate tying up the phone line to wrestle with a dial-up connection...) It's just so much easier at work, and I have so much more free time here than at home. :-)

Our traffic is much higher during the week than it is on weekends. I didn't realize that so many people surfed the web from work, but I think we get a lot of traffic from people at work.

The LAN connection at work just makes it so much easier. Who wants to fight with a dial-up? Until I get broadband at home -- which will be soon, assuming I can talk the wife into it -- I don't spend a lot of time online at home. Some, sure. But only when it's necessary, or late at night when I know that no one's gonna try and call. Usually when I'm home by myself, too -- just because my wife isn't prone to surfing game sites.

Even with broadband like I have I tend to do more game playing or computer tweaking at home at night. During the day it is do boring work or surf. :)

Yeah, me too. I typically have more pressing things to do at night, and if not, I'm gaming. At work, though, surfing is the most fun you can have without gaming, and it's way less conspicuous.

Maybe we should make Quarter to Three look like a spreadsheet? :)

That's a great idea, Mark!! That would really help me out with my boss. It's very hard to explain how a website devoted to games is work-related!!

I remember when games used to have a "boss key" or in the case of Space Quest III, a fake "boss key" that showed exactly how much time you had spent playing the game.

Yeah, I spend a lot of time with my fingers over the "alt+tab" buttons...

I remember boss keys :) Alt tab only works for a quick glance use alt f4 if he comes inside.

I once found a Missile Command clone that used Right-Click as its boss key, but it still left a big button on the taskbar for everyone to see...

But that kills the program! I can't lose my game!

Seriously, though, alt-tab minimizes it to the taskbar -- which I have set to auto-hide. And I usually have so much crap down there that he'd never notice anyway...

Mark -- aka All Powerful -- I've been trying to
get into a topic for a couple days now. The
Movies topic. Haven't been able to access it.
Did it just disappear? Are we allowed to talk
about film here in the open, or only if it is
buried inside of other topics?

That's weird. Discus says the topic isn't there. Maybe it's been hax0red? I'll see what I can do. At the very least I'll set up a new one.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Mark Asher on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 - 08:28 pm:

Ok, the movie topic address was screwy and I wasn't sure how to fix it within Discus, so I created a new "Movies" topic and transferred all the old messages into it. Thing is, now there are two movies topics. Anyway, the one last on the list works.

Mark, all powerful?

Nah.

That's my job. Look at the source HTML :-) I wrote nasty things about Mark and Tom all through it, and they never noticed.

Hey, speaking of that...

who setup the message board here? I'm trying to decide on one to use at gamepsychic.com. I've got PHP and MySQL access over there, but beyond that I don't have admin rights on the box (unlike the server where coregamer is, where I'm root when I need it)

Just wondering what hurdles you have to jump to get one of these set up.
