has to be Phantasy Star Online! this games is basically a MUCH graphically updated version of Diablo 1 with a console rpg flair to it. and nice customizable character models ala Unreal Tournament. and the monster models are great as well! plus its sci fi! wow!
anyway, even the classes are very close to diablo 1 classes . .. with hunter, ranger and force chars. the one thing i like about PSO is that there's guns in the game! and theyre balanced well too!

Ok, so what do you need to play this game, and how will it be patched, etc.? I'm curious.

Sounds a little simplistic, with only four classes. Then again, I wasn't a Diablo fan.
By Mark Asher on Sunday, February 4, 2001 - 05:31 pm:
Well, Diablo only had 3 and D2 only has 5 classes.
By mtKafka (Mtkafka) on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 - 03:04 am:
theres actually nine classes in PSO, but they are just subsets of three main classes.
Hunter chars are like Fighters.
- the human male
- the human female
- the male android
Rangers are like Thieves in Diablo
- the human male
- the male android
- the female android
Force are like wizards
- the human female
- the human male
- the elf? female
basically the nine classes are different . . . ie. an android cannot use any magic, androids generally do more dmg. so its possible to play a semi magic using fighter type in PSO. also, males and females are a bit different (though mostly its cosmetic).
anyway, this is a great game for fans of the ole hack n slash rogue/nethack/angband/diablo games. its a very solid game.
try it out on a monitor, youll be surprised how GREAT (imo) the graphics are in PSO than in alot of 3d PC games.
the fanboy in me LOVES this game!!!

Bumping up . .. so nobody here has played this excellent DC game?
what a shame . . . this is the best game ive played this year (albeit this year is only two months old).
anyway, all you need is a DC and if you plan to play online alot a keyboard. . . its fun i tell ya!

I wish it had a single-player game. I just don't feel like fooling with Sega's modem stuff. I have DSL. I think I'd have to get a new dial-up account to play PSO, and it's just too much trouble.
They should port it to the PC. At this point it wouldn't hurt the DC.

it has a solo player mode, in fact you can play all the way up to level 99 offline. . .its exactly like Diablo. . . its worth it imo for even the single player (3/4 the time i play it offline). . . though the story in it is simplistic offline, just like Diablo 1, though i think the PSO quests are much better. a certain of the solo quests let you play with npc's in your party, like in diablo 2.
mark, its a good game! i think youd like it. . .
i hope as well they port it to PC, it really is a better game than the diablo games for PC. . . it has to be played to be seen.
btw my names Mark too!

Yeah, I agree with Mark.
I'm just not willing to buy a DC and deal with dialup again for a single game.
They really should port it to PC.. no question they'd make money on it, especially given the good reviews the game has gotten. And since they already have the server infrastructure to handle the game, it's almost 50% complete for the PC already. Just develop a PC client and off we go.

There is a broadband adapter workaround for the game. . . though its unsupposrted by Sega. . . i guess they didn't want to rule out Dial up users by devoting net code to cable/DSL modem users (a mistake XBOX games might make). . . its possible to play with a faster than dial up connection. . . they have FAQ's for it. . .
i think Sega should make more of these type of games for PC what with the million selling diablo games. id go so far as to say that PSO if marketed well could OUTSELL Diablo on PC. . . its that good imo. as well BEST rpg graphics from ANY system, imo of course.
only complaint with the game is that its shorter than Diablo2 and a tad bigger than Diablo 1. Still an excellent game online or offline mode, and Sega has already planned to make PSO2 by the end of this year!!! YEEHAW!!!
