Can anyone recommend a good digital camera for a Christmas gift? The specs:
* For my 59-year-old dad, pretty good with the computer but I'd like to get something relatively easy to use
* 3 megapixels minimum
* good battery length
* if possible, the lens ought to be not as "wide angle" as so many of the cheaper models seem to be. zoom would be preferable.
* budget: $400-$600
The nikon coolpix cameras look good but they seem so small for his hands.

Take a look at some of Sony's Cybershot cameras. Mine's been great so far.

http://www.cnet.com has an excellent comparative review section for stuff like this. I used it to find recommendations for scanners, inkjets, and MP3 players, and I have been very happy with the results.

You can get the Canon G-1 for about $600. It's a great camera (I've had a few digitals.) You can set it to point and shoot, or you can go to full manual, and everything in between. 3MP, battery lasts forever.

The Canon Powershot A20 is about $399,
but it's only 2.1megapixels (although I'm a
graphic designer, and 2.1mp has been fine for
all my purposes).
It's fairly big as digital cams go. Takes
Compact Flash, which is great, IMHO. The CF
cards have gotten so cheap -- just picked up a
64meg card (holds about 100 high res pix) for
$30.
I have an older S100 Digital Elph, and I've
been really, really happy with it (and I've also
been through quite a few digital cameras), but
that one's probably much too small for your
dad.
