60 Second Review of…
Silent Hunter II
Tom's review: In previews, the developers at Ultimation
and the producers at SSI/Mattel/UbiSoft assured us that it just
wasn't possible to do a dynamic campaign in Silent Hunter II. They
either cited a lack of resources (fair enough) or that it couldn't
possibly be done right on today's hardware (a line of bullshit that
could only be delivered -- and swallowed -- by someone who hasn't
bothered to play sub sims). The finished [sic] game suffered not
just for its lack of dynamic campaign, but also for an atrocious
AI that made a farce of any claims to historical verisimilitude.
But the real tragedy of Silent Hunter II is that Ultimation's reputation
has plunged from being one of the last of the sim makers to just
another developer helping to bury the whole fucking genre under
their half-baked crap. There was some hope they might be able to
fix it up with a patch or two, but then Destroyer
Command came out.
