Act of War: High Treason -- How Mercenary

As real time strategy games borrow ideas from each other, I hope the mercenary idea from Act of War's High Treason expansion doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Act of War doesn't get nearly as much attention as it deserves, and I suspect the High Treason expansion won't find much of an audience.

Because cool ideas really should cross pollinate new games. For instance, Rise of Legends' neutral map sites are the latest iteration of the sites you could visit in Warcraft 3, such as goblin labs, mana altars, and so on. It's a way to encourage players to get out on the map to add some additional flavor to whatever side they're playing.

Similarly for High Treason's mercenaries. There's a lot that can be done with the idea of players competitively bidding on a pool of neutral units. Earth 2160 did this by periodically offering heroes, encouraging players to get in bidding wars over who would get which hero. It's a great way to encourage early competition and interaction among players, particularly during the build-up phase when everyone's off playing in his own corner.
