Fo Crosswor Puzzl Lover Onl

I'm going to suggest to Kiki that we just stay in and play the anagram game in Crosswor DS instead of going bowling and watching me try in vain to get three strikes in a row for the Gobble Gobble achievement.

There's also a New York Times Crossword game for the DS that has a pretty nifty interface. It is my never-leave-home-without-it DS cart because it is always engaging. It tracks how you do against real NYT puzzles on their actual publish dates. You can play them in any order you wish, it has single-letter hint buttons, and it grades you on them from F to A+. The calendar screen does a nice job of showing what an A+ monday guy I am; what a C+ Thursday guy I am; and let's not talk about Sunday.

I just have to get this off my chest: I hate Will Shortz. Every Saturday morning (or is it Sunday?) on Weekend Edition on NPR, he doles out a puzzle, and 10% of the time it's a fun little puzzle that's actually fun to figure out. But the other 90% of the time, the puzzle goes something like this:

I'm thinking of a celebrity name. When you take this name, and you cross it with another celebrity's name, they make an anagram that spells "Will Shortz sucks". Who are the two celebrities?

OK, obviously I made that up. But I can't express just how passionately I hate Will Shortz' obsession with celebrity names. Is he the same way when he designs the New York Times crossword puzzle? I've never actually seen one.

I hate to state the obvious to you, Tom, but Crosswor DS = Crosswords, just with some edgy capitalization.

Late notice, but the DS NYT Crossword is $10 as the Amazon Dotd today (only a couple hours left now).

Is it? I'd bite if I could confirm that, but the Dotd here is 20% off selected digital photo frames...

Oh, wait, it's showing up as regularly-priced at $9.99.

Sorry, I should have specified that it is the Video Games deal of the day, so you have to look under the Video Game category, then click on the Dotd button on the right hand side of the screen.

Man, $10 bucks for the NYT crossword DS game?!? I just bought it, and I don't even own a DS! I don't suppose anyone has an old non-Lite DS they want to unload for cheap?

They're only $80 or so at EB. I bought mine used from them a couple years back, and it's still working perfectly.

No, I don't think that's righ, Omniscia. You can clearly see from the box that the game is called Crosswor. Like Wizards of Wor, but with crossword puzzles instead of wizards.

By the same token, the game appears to be for the Nintend8 DS.

Actually, it was Wizard of Wor, singular.

PS I agree it is CrossWor DS.

I've never had any luck with crossword puzzles, I'm more a sudoku lover and my mom is a cryptogram expert, speaking of which are there any good Sudoku games either out or coming soon for the DS? Not counting the puzzles shipped in the two Brain age titles that I've already finished.

Another vote for the New York Times crossword game. I haven't tried Wizard of WorDS, but you can't argue with the pedigree of the NYT game. And, as was already mentioned, the interface is pretty nice.

You could always just buy the newspaper. You're supposed to solve easy crosswords like the ones in the NY Times in ink, anyhow, so the value of a DS version is highly debatable....

Do you put your puzzle on the fridge after you complete it? Just don't use any of the hints.

I hate real crosswords. Firstly because I can't spell worth a damn. Secondly they are full of sly cultural references from the 1930s-1960s which means they're basically for old people.

Nick and Nora's dog? Come on, based on what I learned from Wikipedia we have a Neil Simon play, a 1939 movie and a freaking radio show. Which means to know this you have to be a drama fag, a classic movie buff, an old man or blind. My dad is 70 and was born blind so he listens to radio shows, all his blind friends listen to radio shows and I expect those are the only people who still listen to radio shows.

Crosswords are for losers.

Yurislave, I have never seen a Thin Man movie. I wouldn't know Myrna Loy or whoever played Nick from Adam (I want to say William Holden, but that can't be right). I've never read Dasheil Hammet, nor do I even know how to spell his name.

But the point of the Nick and Nora's dog thing (its name is Asta) is that the answer is suited to crossword puzzles. It's got nothing to do with the actual cultural reference so much as it's got vowels at either end and two common consonants in the middle. So it's perfectly suited for piecing words together.

Crossword puzzles aren't for old people. They're for people who do crossword puzzles.

The first "Thin Man" is very much worth watching, Tom. If you really haven't seen any. And "After the Thin Man" has a very young Jimmy Stewart in it.

I can't decide which is goofier: the dog or dude's mustache. And that's definitely not William Holden. But his daughter sure is cute!

Hey Rimbo, now do "agra".

It's William Powell who also starred in the fantastic 'Life with Father'. I am shocked, SHOCKED, that you have never seen a Thin Man movie Tom. They are not classics (arguably the first is close), but they take such a great snapshot of the time, they are worth watching even without the whodunit attached. Admittedly I have questionable tastes, but a Thin Man movie is a movie that I will not change if I pass by it, no matter how far the movie has come along (although I do this with The Goonies too).

As for the game, I'd love to see a cryptic crosswords title for the DS. If Will Shortz can throw his weight around, I would like to think it an eventuality.

Why isn't there a version of Scrabble available for the DS over here? They've got one in Europe!

Or is there one and I've simply failed to find it?

You can download a demo of this to your DS through a Wii with the new Nintendo channel, and the demo includes a sample Hard puzzle.

And just to screw with you, they refer to it as "Crosswords DS"...

The book is pretty good too. The infinite string of movie sequels is not so hot.

A thousand puzzles on a DS cartridge beats the hell out of carrying around a thousand copies of the NYT.

Will Shortz doesn't design the NYT crossword puzzles. He edits them. But to answer your question, no. There are many puzzle types in the world. There's a few select types he does on Weekend Edition, because that's his Weekend Edition thing. I don't think you hate him. I think you hate that particular puzzle type, which I'm guessing the WE audience likes in general.

Also, consider this another testiment to the greatness that is the NYT Crossword Puzzle game for DS. 1k challenging and well-built puzzles on a single DS cart for a low price is hard to beat.

Whoever Will Shortz is, he still sucks for letting inane crap into the puzzles. Today in the studio we were working on one that had a bunch of ridiculous punny answers. One was "Obtain ore from the White Cliffs?" and the answer was "MINEDOVERMATTER"

Sheesh.

A DS is still a lot smaller than a newspaper.

I have a 20 minute subway commute, and I can do a Monday puzzle in 8-9 mins, a Tuesday-Wednesday puzzle in 10-13 minutes, and Thursdays in 20 minutes or so, so I frequently do more than one puzzle in a single sitting. To say nothing of when I bring the game along for longer travel periods than my ordinary every-day commute.

Also, Agra for the record:

Now someone do "SST."
