Gary Gygax to roll new character.
At the age of 69.
If it weren't for him, a lot of us would have known the tender touch of woman earlier and more frequently than we did. But would any of us trade away the great times he gave us for the attention of a pretty girl? Yes. But all we would have then is herpes and memories, whereas now, we all have memories and maybe a t-shirt which we have to explain a lot. Either way, we should thank him for the pizza, and soda, and Dungeons and Dragons, an episode or two of moral panic, a bad Tom Hanks film, the most hilarious of all Chick Tracts (take that, H.P. Lovecraft!), all role-playing games in general from Final Fantasy to Ganguro Girl Delux, late nights rolling treasure tables for an intelligent sword we scammed by abusing a Wish spell, but not the fish. That was somebody else. I don't know about the rest of you, but I plan to honor his memory the only way I can. By pouring myself some wine in a skull shaped flagon and proceeding to bore the tits off my wife by talking about my character. |

Thanks, I didn't see that it was in games. While we're on the subject, I want to have sex with Tom... Wham!

I guess you know you are getting old when all the heroes and icons of your youth start to die off. My time playing D&D was high on my list of fondest memories. Gary, thanks for giving all us nerds something to do while the other guys played grab ass and machismo ball out in the yard.
This, like the death of Fred Rogers, came really close to bringing me to tears. What a classy, good-natured guy! If only we had many more like him, the world would be a better place. Steve |

You can do anything with PVC pipes, cardboard, and duct tape.
My brother and I never played DnD. We were real men! We made lances with PVC pipes, borrowed swords (blunted, but I still have a scar where a neighbor stabbed me in the head) from a kid whose Marine dad had a ton in their closet, made shields with boogie boards, and engaged in full contact jousting from atop our bikes. We even built a small "castle" (four walls at chest height) out of PVC and cardboard and flung mud at people from inside it.
But I'll give credit where credit is due -- we were infected with knight fever by an older kid at Scouts who was totally into DnD. (I'll try to find a pic or two, because, seriously, it was awesome) |
