Score! Held off during the Christmas sale, as I was hoping for a better deal on the Gold edition later. Turns out I didn't have to wait all that long :)

Thanks! I liked both Lugaru and NS1 enough to risk a measily $40 in order to support these devs.

Gidgantic even.

Beat the first one, loved it. Started the second one and loved it till the last two battles, at which point I stopped playing. That was like 40+ hours later so it was money well spent even at launch retail.

With apologies to Dave Long:

You people are nuts about this imaginary "Steam convenience" thing. Buying games you will never play is one thing, but buying them again without weighing the likelihood of playing them again, losing the disc, or Steam shutting down is just silly.

Take back the "might!"

Steam convenience is very real for me. I never, ever have to use a disc again. I can uninstall and reinstall a game as much as I want, on any computer I want to. I never have to worry about downloading a crack ever again, and I don't have to ever bring a disc into work if I want to play a game there.

If I reformat my drive, I can install any game I want to extremely easily.

Also, Steam is not going away any time soon.

My past 20 years of computer gaming suggests that the likelihood of me losing my disc (or having the disc stop working) at any given point in time is way higher than the likelihood of Steam disappearing forever.

Okay, but if you already have your disc, are the odds of you losing it really so high that it makes sense to buy a game now on the off-chance that maybe you'll lose your disc later? Even if the game is $10 now and normally $20, you're ahead of the game if you buy it full-price only after you lose the disc (and care) later, unless you lose things way more often than most people.

And then we have Bob.

Sorry, Dave, I'd better stop now. The Steam rants occur monthly it seems, although they're still fewer posts in the Bargain Thread than everyone talking about how they're going to buy their games all over again. :)

On the other hand, I didn't even consider mkozlows's taking the time preference flaw you normally see with sales of games people will never play and applying it to sales of games people already own. Good one, there.

Can you not register your KB serial number with Steam if you already own a physical copy? That was my plan.

I think I tried that about 2 weeks ago and it didn't work for me. Although I may have messed up on the typing possibly. For 4.50 though I don't mind getting a digital copy of it.

I've purchased a couple things at $5 or less that I already owned before, mainly for convenience and the funny thing is I actually play them more because of it. In the Steam sale, I got the Jedi Knight package or whatever it was called. I started Dark Forces and plan to play through all the games. I may never do that in total, but at $15 or whatever it cost, I'm playing something that I wouldn't otherwise have pulled out ever again... and enjoying it!

I was definitely one of Steam's strongest critics in the early years, mainly because it didn't work right and being able to re-sell games made a lot of sense. Today I'm earning more than I was back then. The problem now is lack of time. So I'm paying dollars to get convenience and that's actually pretty invaluable to me personally.

I think I'd play more games on the consoles if I didn't have to do the disc dance every time I switch games. And in a house with three kids, it's unlikely the game I was playing yesterday is still in the tray when I come back today.

I'm pretty sure you can, but that you would still need the disc in the drive and you would need to use retail patching (ie - the only benefit is you get your game on one consolidated list). I've heard that the disc-free/downloadable auto-patches only get added in for Valve products you buy at stores.

No. That does not work. That only works for a small subset of games on Steam.

They are listed on this page. If you don't see a game on that page, then it isn't possible.

This is exactly how I feel, and why I'm willing to spend the $5. I abhor having to swap discs. If you grew up gaming on 5.25" and 3.5" floppies, you likely feel likewise.

Oh come on, honestly? The disk dance? Nothing is simpler than switching out disks on the PS3, they even auto boot. That you play fewer games because you have to put them in and take them out has to be one of the lamest non-excuses i've heard. Unless you keep your game disks on the opposite side of the house, in a safe, or something similarly bizarre.

It's not the taking in and out part that sucks. I have 100+ games listed in my Steam account. Keeping tabs and storing that many disks next to my computer would most definitely be a pain.

I regularly find myself in the mood to play something that I haven't launched in a while and realize the disks are upstairs in my office. So, I generally just play something else. Also, playing games at work or on my laptop makes disk juggling an inconvenience.

Back to bargains...

Not my cup of tea, but Blue Dragon for the DS is $10 on Amazon Gold Box...

I've certainly decided which console or game to play based on "Well, which one won't require me to get up from the couch and walk across the room to fiddle with stuff?"

Sure, it's lazy, but when I come home from a long day at work and want to unwind, the lowest effort option often wins.

Once you get used to disc-free gaming, it's hard to go back.

You must not have three kids and a spouse who plays. Or you have three kids and a spouse who are all super organized and put stuff back where it belongs every time. If you have this, you should be on Dr. Phil as a model family. Otherwise you need to realize that the fewer physical things you have to keep track of in a family, the better.

My son takes my stuff, takes it to friends' house, leaves it there, finally brings it back under threat of losing an arm, and does it all again the next week. He's 18 years old, so we're past 'time outs'. The easiest way for me to have access to my games is have them downloaded. Very simple.

Is that Steam mid-week thing something regular now?

I got King's Bounty for that price.

Cocerning the "buy again" to have it digitally:
Usually I refrain from that but in this case I did exactly this. I do own the Collector's Edition of "King's Bounty".
This time it was the price of 3,74 EUR (I spend around 11-12 EUR on my lunch each work day).

I think that maybe publishers should start offering an additional "digital copy" for a low price as an extra edition of a retail boxed game release.
Speaking as a collector that would enable me to keep the retail box shrinkwrapped.
Speaking as someone that wants to OWN the games not only now but in 5-10 years as well this would give me the security if the online service ever stops working I can install the game using the retail box.

Like say I get then game for 25 EUR I would pay an additional 5 EUR for a digital code I could use to get the game from Steam.
However ONLY if the game is not DRM install-limited since that would defy the 2nd copy for me.

Sure some people would give the 2nd copy away to someone else then and shit but maybe someone could figure out something that works.
Amazon is trying it with their program now to enable you to watch the file in stream while it's physicially sent to you (as dvd etc.).
Something alike might work for games as well.
