I just don't believe that video. There has to be a trick. I wish they'd zoom out while it was painting.

At the very least, I'm sure the elephant was trained exactly what to paint and where (that is, it didn't come up with it). I guess that's obvious anyway, and it's still pretty amazing if that's what is happening and it's not a hoax.

EDIT: so turns out not a hoax, but directed:

The elephants aren't consciously trying to represent trees. They're given a brush with brown paint on it and the trainer waves his arms up and down. Then they're given one with green on it and the trainer makes a prodding motion towards the paper, etc. If the elephant copies the trainer, it gets a bun or something.
That's pretty cool, even still, I doubt anyone really thought elephants came up with the idea for a self portrait.

Summer Glau twirling that baton would have been hotter.

Also, I have no idea why I'm giggling so much at the Joe Pesci video.

Why are you so sure?

No doubt it's taken some time to teach them to paint, much the same as it takes some time to get humans to learn to paint beyond just smudging colors about. It seems clear to me that they understand what they are painting, and it's more akin to painting what the art teacher suggests in an art class, than merely copying brush strokes. This is exactly how humans learn to be artists!

Do they pick their own topics? I've no idea, but wouldn't rush to the knee jerk assumption that animals are stupid, and therefore humans must pick for them. Consider that your first assumption of a hoax appears to have been completely untrue...

Personally, I don't understand the mindset that art must be a uniquely human thing. It reminds me strongly of the old fashion notion that animals have no capacity for language.

Holy cow, memorized or not, the elephant painting is impressive. A poster in the snopes forum added his personal photos: http://rpglab.net/troberg/gallery/view.php?gid=82

I would have thought those pictures were definite fakes.

Also, don't forget that elephants are one of the few animals that seem to recognize themselves in mirrors. They may have some limited concept of self image, which would not surprise me. They are awesome animals.

Man I saw this somewhere and dismissed it thinking they were just going to mark up the canvas in crazy strokes. It's incredible the elephant can control the paintbrush like that.

Try to get a typical 3 year old human to paint with that precision, even if you train and reward them.

Amazing.

I never said "animals are stupid". I'm well aware of how smart elephants are. I also don't have the mindset that "art is a human thing", esp. since I don't even really think art is a specific thing. I do think people tend to anthropomorphise in these situations, and greatly underestimate how good social animals are at reading subtle signals from trainers -- for example, the famous horse that could "do math".

My point is I'm skeptical elephants came up with these images themselves, and this seems to be born out by the signals the trainers are giving them. They were taught to paint particular pictures, and they do it well. What the elephants are doing here is plenty impressive, but I'd need to see some much more convincing proof to believe it's an elephant who was taught to paint and then strolls up to the canvas and thinks "today I'm going to paint a self portrait, and heck, I'll throw in a butterfly".

Rip Torn* tunes up Norman Mailer in front of his kids. For real, I think?

http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=22440

EDIT:*between Larry Sanders and this, he is officially America's Greatest Actor
EDIT EDIT: I got interested so here's the scoop - this is from Maidstone, a movie Norman Mailer was directing, starring Norman Mailer, Written by Norman Mailer (natch):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064625/

And Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidstone_%28film%29
Quote:
The film is now famous for the improvised fight between Norman Mailer and Rip Torn. As the camera rolled, Torn struck Mailer in the head with a hammer, intending to "kill his character." Mailer's scalp opened up, and a vicious fight ensued. With the camera still rolling, Torn energetically strangled Mailer until the fight was broken up by Mailer's wife Beverly and Mailer's wailing children. During the melee, Mailer bit off a small chunk of Rip Torn's ear. The fight, in which the actors called each other by their real names, made it into the film, and the segment has proven very popular on the Internet in recent years.

Wow. Those completely redefined the terms "fanservice" and "over the top." Every ten seconds or so. Continuously. They made the FFVII Advent Children movie look like the fight scene from West Side Story.

I want to say "too much of a good thing," but I did smile all the way through both of them.
