Wow Derek and Starforce in the same thread.

It reminds me of the promo for 'The Russia House' - 'Three of the greatest names of the 20th century - Connery, Streep and the USSR'

Hey,

It's funny how he says he has never had one complaint about the use of Starforce in his new game (UCAWA) when his forums were lit up for a while people started complaining that they had "used up" all the keys installing and reinstalling the game to get it to work. Until the complainers were threatened by Smart and his toadies or banned of course.

It is also funny when Smart says that Starforce causes no problems his games when he admitted after a patch that a severe performance problem introduced in his game was caused by Starforce.

This is pure comedy. Thanks for the link.

I think Avault was the only remaining public message board that tolerated the Taco Commander but after this stunt I think he and his sockpuppets will finally be exiled in the Taco Palace.

Honestly, if you're already relegated to the Adrenaline Vault, where is there to fall? Is he going to move to No Mutants Allowed next? Some .jp only hentai forum? Where can he go from here?

Oh, right. Octopus Overlords.

Many in the gaming community know that Mr. Smart has very little credibility and is well known for making false claims. Many such actions of his are documented and can be found listed on a number of web sites including Wikipedia.

Neither the Adrenaline Vault nor NewWorld view this, or any other accusations Mr. Smart may have, as credible or damaging to their operation.
You know, when your lack of credibility has its own Wikipedia entry, maybe it's time to call it quits.

Would be great if avault actually sued derek for libel. Angel is every bit as much of a sonofabitch as Derek, but he probably has more staying power when it comes to litigation. As in, he'd actually follow through and do it.

I'd love to see the two of them fight it out. Preferably in a pit filled with snakes egged on by a post-apocalyptic mutant cheerleader squad. Or a knife-fight on rickety catwalks over molten lava, with "icelord" suspended in slowly descending cage to add dramatic tension to the scene. Ahh, good times.

Kind of interesting in the warez guy's blog that he emphasizes that "we have the right to publish what we want" and a couple of entries later responds to Smart by stating the claim is "libelous" and all that jazz. Of course these are very different situations, but in reflection his be-all statement "publish what we want" appears to be entirely untrue.

The whole "journalist" thing aside, of course...

I like this exchange from the thread containing the accusation:

Thus, your comment that "In fact, SF require that devs who use it, uninstall it as part of the uninstall routine for their games." was in error, as they in fact have a choice as to whether or not to remove SF...?
And Derek never responds again (on that topic)....

EDIT: Wait no there's more, but I can't quote it as I have to go to lunch.

Funny stuff from a concurrent thread on the same issue (Starforce) at Avault. I have edited out cruft.

Cosmonaut_Roger
Tom Chick doesn't like Starforce either. That guy must be an idiot, he doesn't know what he's talking about. And his systems crashing? Pffsshaw! That could have been anything! Right Derek?

Derek Smart
Yes, in fact, he is an idiot. Just because he is a writer doesn't rank him any higher than the average wanker ... Rubbish. Complete.Utter.Rubbish.

Cosmonaut_Roger
Derek, every time anyone has posted anything that disagrees with your steadfast opinion on copy protection, your response has been the same. Look back at your posts, and you'll see a trend of "Rubbish" "Conjecture falsehoods" "No evidence to backup claims".

Those are not appropriate responses when someone has posted ... (reiterates verbose complaint about Starforce)

Derek Smart
Shutup! Shutup! Just shut the f*ck up. I'm sick and tired of reading crap from you and your girlfriend. Its the same circular argument and with NO facts about ANYTHING ... You and your pirate friends can continue vying for your few minutes in fame.

Okay maybe I'm just feeling anti-Teplitsky today, but in that exchange it sure seems like childish one-upsmanship, then Teplitsky goes all lawyer on Derek. I'm not sure what the hell Derek was thinking, seemingly pulling the Ice Lord comment out of his ass, but it makes for oddly amusing reading.

And Mr. Teplitsky (writing on his blog) has just found out that libel cases usually result only in apologies, and cost many thousands of dollars to pursue.

Also, looking at his resume, his skillset doesn't suggest "cracker." Lots of tech basics, but not one programming language, except a reference to ASP. Doesn't being an ICE LORD require one to use disassemblers and languages with complicated horrors like pointers and all that stuff?

Maybe Mr. Teplitksy legal threats were merely a 'homage' to Dr. Smart who always has teams of lawyers on hand scouring the Internets for instances of despicable and libelous slander. ;-)

I was under the impression that the modern pirate scene was 99% disseminating the already cracked code, and one guy someplace in Europe (typically) cracking the code.

These days much of the participation involves high-speed distribution schemes rather than the actual cracking, both of course are still needed.
