Polemic? What's up with that, Greg? Are you implying my opinion is somehow disingenuous?

Whoa, Kasavin posted a single-word post consisting of the word 'polemic' linked to dictionary.com and then deleted it once I'd responded!

What kind of drive-by posting snipe is that? At least have the conviction to leave your post up so I don't look like I'm talking to myself! :)

Tom's obviously off his meds again. It's so tragic--when he concentrates, he's a brilliant mathematician, but when he lets his attention slip...well, it's just so sad.

I don't see any connection between the word "polemic" and the word "disingenuous", and neither does Dictionary.com. But it was a snipe and I took it back.

I'm fully aware of the meaning of the word, thank you.

But would you care to elaborate? How is my short take on Burnout 3 a polemic? I'm simply presenting my opinion, much the same way as you'd present yours on your site, albeit with about a thousand fewer words.

BTW, I fully appreciate the appeal of Burnout 3, it's just not my bag.

It was a snipe (as you pointed out) and I took it back, mostly because I was being too vague and wasn't trying to be insulting (though it came across that way), and I generally try to hold back the urge to participate in discussions such as these anyway. I'm just surprised that someone could be disappointed by the game (apart from the soundtrack, the announcer, and a few other such trivial bits), and I don't see how someone could defensibly accuse it as having a lack of depth, since there's clearly more to it than most arcade racing games. But I also don't/didn't want to get into a debate about it, which is why I shouldn't have posted what I deleted. And here we are. Figured I owed you an explanation since you noticed. I'm sorry about that.

Okay. No one is disputing that.

Ah, well, that's kind of what these forums are for. You know, the whole discussing games thing.

As for whether Burnout 3 lacks depth, that's pretty subjective and wasn't the extent of my comments. My complaints are a lot more specific than that.

If Kasavin hadn't deleted his post, you could have used it to check dictionary.com! But here: "Showing little thought, preparation, or concern."

For instance, banging off walls to help you make a turn, which is a pretty typical arcade racer convention.

Tom, Tom, Tom.

I must stop being your friend now. And you were doing so well since Deus Ex!

I'm with you on Burnout 3 being a disappointment Tom, but I just can't make myself spend the money on a Test Drive game, and I don't even know where my Blockbuster card is these days.

Don't think of it as a Test Drive game, Wholly! Seriously. It has absolutely nothing in common with any Test Drive game I've ever had the misfortune of playing. If you're disappointed in Burnout 3, think of it as the game you wished you'd been playing.

Now get thee to a Blockbusters. Or, better yet, since I can't imagine it sold well, keep an eye out for a used copy on eBay.

i actually like burnout 3 a lot. the road rage races are great for playing with a girlfriend that doesn't play games very much.

by "rubberband AI" i assume that you mean the other cars are always right behind or right in front of you, no matter how often you wreck or wreck them? i also found that pretty annoying. even more annoying in later races, where they get little penalty for a wreck and you get fucked when you do.

i also thought the camera after a wreck made it difficult to score aftertouch takedowns and sometime difficult to control your car in crash courses.

other than that, very enjoyable arcade racer.

Why would there be a "used" copy on eBay if it didn't sell well?

I'm not sure what you're asking, Bub, but it's pretty simple:

The conventional wisdom is that games that are selling well go for higher prices on eBay. But less successful games probably move pretty cheaply. So I'm recommending that Wholly might check eBay if he can't afford to buy Eve of Destruction at full price.

Xbox looks better and supports 4-player games.

I did about three weeks ago, not as cheap as I thought it would be, but if you bide your time, you can find one for around $30.

Yes, but you never know where those games have BEEN.

This becomes more of a concern if you've ever spent more than five minutes listening to the people on Xbox Live.

I was interested in Burnout 3 because I liked Burnout 2 sooooooo much. Saw it on a friend's PS2. Looks better, but a bit of a MOTS thing to me as far as the game itself. I'm sure it's a great buy if you want to play an arcade racer online, though.

But then I found out that the Cube isn't getting Burnout 3, so I don't have a decision to make anyway. My consolation prize was picking up SSX3 for $15 from a bargain bin. I've only just gotten into it, but the preliminary take is that SSX3 rocks and I'm way late to the party.
