Nice endgame spoiler on page three. Thanks for that!

Otherwise, a good read.

Just how many days from release date does that review account span?

I can't believe you glow over Painkiller so much but then call Doom a soulless derivitave. Doom may not be very plausible, but at least it's coherent. I got so sick of starting each new level in PK in a random setting - it made no sense. So far in Doom I actually feel like I'm going somewhere, rather than just spawning in a corner of city on water or way above a train station for no reason.

Maybe I will burn out on the game by the time I reach the end, but so far I've found it a great deal more fun than PK.

Shit man, I've even found it more fun than Daikatana.

How is Doom any more derivitave than PK anyway?

Tom, are you reviewing Doom 3 for a site or publication?

BTW, great Shoot Club!

Personally I think all of their criticisms are spot-on. Yes, I'm having fun, but no, Doom 3 is not the second coming, except in engine design, which at this point is not a source for brownie points for id. But then, I found Painkiller to be rather boring and pointless.

Tom's also scoring brownie points with Valve.

I haven't even got to Alpha Labs yet (I just got to the martianbuddy.com locker), and already I agree with the conclusion -- impressive engine, but a pretty unoriginal story and repititive gameplay. Does the entire game consist of "Open door, lights go out, bitch about how I can't see shit, pull out my flashlight, bitch about how I can't have a both weapon and a flashlight or use night vision goggles, something jumps at me, pull out weapon, shoot monster, go to next room, repeat"?

Well, he also balances it out with the very last sentence, "I just wish Half-Life 2 would hurry up and come out."

I didn't care for painkiller, but that review was very on-point and entertaining. Once again, Tom, you show yourself to be a good writer and a good critic...with maybe some questionable tastes thrown in for good measure.

Maybe? MAYBE? Ask him what he thinks about Deus Ex.

I would have to agree completely with the shoot club 'review'. However, the lighting and 'monster closets' still managed to frighten me like i've never been frightened in any form of entertainment media. That feeling alone made me forgive the rest of it.

That was a very enjoyable read, as always. I'm psyched more for the next Shoot Club about Half-Life 2 or Duke Nukem Forever than I am about the actual games now*.

*I wasn't all that psyched about them to begin with.

Loved the review, but found this ad kind of funny given the context:

I'm not a fan of the shoot club (sorry) but this one was pretty good. Love the best buy story. Pretty much every person I know has come out and said the same things about Doom. I'm enjoying it. I know the whole thing is kind of blah, but at least it isn't Never Winter nights blah. Thief 3 and Far Cry were both better.

Not to derail, but do a search on Doom 3 at amazon... you'll see the same thing. It's very amusing. :)

And with that post, I learn not to trust Rob Merritt's opinion on anything. The man doesn't like Shoot Club, or NWN? Weird.

Great, as always, Chick.

It's good if you like Tom Chick reviews. He's a little too picky and harsh for my tastes. He needs to lighten up. I just want to know if a game is fun or not. You know?

Ah, just teasing. :) Sorta. Can I ever forget Tom's Falcon 4 review?

But, hey, I did know a girl who worked in Best Buy and flirted with me one time, but I can't remember her name anymore.

Doom 3 is pretty soulless compared to PK, but it's got more soul than Chick gives it credit for. This is due almost entirely to Imps, spiders, and those things that crawl around on 4 legs. Everything else kinda takes its cue from those monsters, and suddenly the game doesn't seem so soulless anymore. It's actually kinda growing on me as I play further on.

I just don't get the love PK recieves from most of you. I'm not knocking the game or your opinions, but I just don't get it? I found the game pretty darn dull. Walk into an area, gates close, kill bad guys, gates open, move into next area, repeat. I mean it was gorgeous to look at, nicely polished, but fell completely flat for me.

Oh well, different strokes I guess.

That was a great Shoot Club. Pretty much everything in there I agree with ,specially how Trev was really excited at the start, then just waiting for it to end. I also love the PEZ thing (take a good look when you shoot a zombie with no head.. "o_0". )

I demand more game reviews be written like this. I may actually use my bookmark to the front page. :)
