Of course, that's what these previews are for as well, right?
Once again, to those of us who read previews and frequent gaming boards, yes, it's pretty obvious that this is not a sequel. Not every person who plays the Fallout games are as hardcore as us, and don't read gaming news sites. However when they see that there is a new Fallout game in the store one day, they're going to think "Oh lookie, a sequel."

I'm not saying that they're labeling it a sequel. They just need to make sure that they market it as though it's an expansion pack. That means TV promo ads that say "A spin-off of 2008's GOTY". I would hate for there to be backlash against the game because uninformed buyers thought it was something it wasn't.

But if they have played more than one fallout game (including or not including non rpg spinoffs) they already know that the fallout games haven't been direct sequels in the past either...

I'll admit that even though I'm a big Fallout guy, I've been in a New Vegas blackout. That is why those screenshots surprised me. I had expected the game to be a bit more than a really big standalone expansion. Again, that isn't a bad thing, just not what I expected when I heard Obsidian was developing a new Fallout game.

Correction: *half* of it shows up as an object on the map you parked it at, thus fucking up your save, and you have to start the entire goddamned game over again.

Fixed in patch!

My companion/pack mule/slave also disappeared in fallout 3 at one point. I was sad.

What do you mean it fucked your save? i usually found the other half of the car in some other city, generally in arroyo or the mutant fortress.

I honestly can't tell if this is a typo, or you having a go at the car's bugginess.

It still can be an "Obsidian" game. Screenshots doesn't say anything about stuff like dialogues, quests complexity, reputation system, choices & consequences, combat frequency, humour, exploration, etc.

I hate bethesda's PR policy.

Quote:
Eurogamer: New Vegas, then. What's your role in the team?

Chris Avellone: I can't say.

Eurogamer: Not your job title?

Chris Avellone: I can't say!

Eurogamer: Okay. But so, like, if I, for example, were making a game called Fallout: New Vegas, and I was using the Fallout 3 engine, and I had my own development studio, and I was just going around asking people for advice, what would you tell me?

Chris Avellone: I could not even speculate on that. I would be shot in the head.

Eurogamer: It was worth a try. Okay, so, how has working with Bethesda been - in general, I mean?

Chris Avellone: I probably can't speak about that either.

Although why won't he say what is his position is beyond me, since everyone knows he is senior designer on it.

So Chris believes that an RPG isn't an RPG unless it allows the player to make plot-related decisions. Hmm. That metric seems like it would narrow the field quite a bit.

Great interview! Thanks for the link!

(Well, except the part you quoted. That was kind of pointless).

I thought it was a fantastic interview. Not really because it revealed anything new (which it didn't), or even because it was massively interesting (which it wasn't, really), but because it was so laughably improbable it could have been taken from a spy film.

I doubt it has anything to do with Bethesda. That interview was orchestrated to promote Alpha Protocol, a game developed by Obsidian for Sega being released in 6 weeks. Sega PR probably asked him to keep on topic.

Avellone is also known for having a sense of humor, so it could have also been meant to be a funny way for him to basically tell them he's not authorized to talk about New Vegas at that point.

That wouldn't appear to be true since the first two pages he talks mainly about past Fallout games and doesn't talk about AP until the 3rd page. If it was to be about AP I think we would have seen the interview go straight there from the beginning.

Yeah. Plus it wouldn't make sense anyway. What does make sense is that Bethesda has its own PR plans and does not want anyone to talk about anything until those plans are in motion. Like it was with all their previous games.

He may have been able to talk about old Fallout games but not New Vegas. Which makes sense since AP is out before and would obviously be more of a priority currently.

Somebody linked to this on another board - pretty impressive use of the Fallout 3 engine.

That was really great. Thanks for that link. And I knew all those places!!! I recognized every single place. Not surprising after spending 120+ hours in the Capital Wasteland.

Does it spoil anything? I am just in the middle of a playthrough (50 hours in, still haven't touched main storyline).
