Why isn't anyone playing the latest Gears of War or God of War?

Given that it's a relatively slow time of year, I'm surprised there isn't more chatter about the latest Gears of War and God of War, both of which do cool new things. Gears is divided into tiny bite-sized challenges that you can vary with optional modifiers, like skulls in Halo. And God of War has a surprisingly addictive multiplayer game. I'm really enjoying both of these for short gratifying play sessions, and they offer a new way to experience what makes them good without having to sit through some turgid storytelling campaign.

Are you guys just burned out on those series? Did the marketing not express the cool new features (I didn't know about these features until I actually started playing the game)? Is the full price of a new console game too prohibitive for you to try experimental tweaks like these? What's going on that old standbys like Gears of War and God of War aren't getting any Qt3 love?

For myself, I played the first installments of each of those series, and didn't like them enough to bother with any of the sequels. More generally, I would suspect a mix of series fatigue and general malaise with the current console generation.

It also doesn't feel like a quiet time of the year from what I can see. The last month has seen three pretty high-profile launches (Tomb Raider, SimCity, and BioShock), and the 3DS finally hit enough of a critical mass of good games to get me to buy one, with Etrian Odyssey IV, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter, and Luigi's Mansion all releasing recently.

Personally I bounced off Gears of War I and have never been back. I've only played one of the God of War games (II i think) and found it so bombastic and frankly misogynistic that I've avoided it subsequently. I am playing Tomb Raider and Far Cry3 and loving them along with a surprisingly large amount of DIII.

Relatively slow time of the year!?

I'm trying to get through Heart of the Swarm, Bioshock Infinite, Etrian Odyssey 4, and I still need to give SimCity more than a few hours of my time (yeah, I know lots of folks have problems with SimCity, but those people have put HOURS into it before getting there, and I'm still enjoying it). This doesn't even touch my backlog, and as far as I know these games all came out withing the last month or so. Also, I want to get Path of Exile and Dragonborn a second play through at some time, and I got Dead Space 3 from the SimCity game freebie.

Slow time of the year. Sheesh.

Burnout for me, really. I didn't even both investigating the games to see if there were any neat few features. That's the problem with franchises - they're supposed to provide some level of familiarity, but that can work against them when you don't expect them to do anything different.

Gears of War Judgement: I did briefly rent it and saw that I'd like it a lot, but there's just too many good games out right now. I finally met Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite (spoiler!), and am looking forward to seeing where that goes. I'm also deeply tied up with X-Com (free with Bioshock Infinite!), which is just blowing me away (but I can't say why without big spoilers). And I still have to go back and continue Tomb Raider, which is excellent so far. And that's just what's out recently, without even going to the backlog. (I just finished Assassin's Creed II today, and immediately started Brotherhood).

As for God of War: Ascension, they lost me at God of War 3. I'm not sure why, but I just lost interest in the series somewhere around the beginning of the third game. To be honest, I never even gave the new game a second look.

I guess it's a slow time of year if Heart of the Swarm and SimCity bounced off you, you've already finished Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite, and you're too scared to dive into another Monster Hunter. :) I'm also plugging away at Etrian Odyssey IV and Brogue, but never for more than a few minutes at a time. But, yeah, fair point. I don't think publishers are going to allow for slow times of year the way they used to.

But Gears has been especially good for quick short fixes of that good ol' Gears gunplay. Even in a busy time of year, it would work great as a palate cleanser. It's literally built to be played in five to ten minute bursts. As many as you want, of course, but still discrete bursts.

And one of the things I like about this God of War is how you it lets you sidestep the typical Kratos bombast.

I'm waiting for Gears Of God Of War.

Actually, I've been eyeing the Gears Of War series for a while - never played any of them, but not particularly into shooters so I'm reluctant. But I'm thinking about picking one of these up to play with a friend of mine who is very much into co-op games (particularly, shooters) but has also never played this series. So I know this thread is about the latest, but should I just start with the 1st? Or should I just jump straight into one of the later games?

I am totally in this camp. I would NEVER call this time of year the slow time of year. I think the Spring release schedule is second only to the holiday floodgates (mostly because it is probably titles that could not be ship ready for a holiday release). My video game sick/ holiday days are almost always March/April or September/October. I am currently not giving nearly the same amount of time to each of the following releases as I would have if they were spread out:

    X-wing wave 2 board game
Starcraft 2 (not totally for me, but I would have played it more if other things didn't take my attention away)
    Etrian Odyssey IV
    Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate
    brogue
Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes (beta and soon to be released when I have been wanting to play it since the original release but its SP status keeps it permanently just at the edge of the "must play it" radar)
Injustice: Gods Among Us (released very soon and will possibly eat my time as the first real chance for a casual to have some meat in a nostalgia tickling fighting game in quite a while)

And that is with completely skipping:

Lego City Undercover (single player game so it is firmly in the "later" camp)
Gears of War: Judgement (their marketing utterly missed me; by the time I realized they had done something possibly interesting with Horde I had already dismissed it as, despite loving GoW3, I was not up for buying it for "just because IP" nonsense)
    Tomb Raider (see lego city)
ZombiU (not new, but I just got it as part of my buy in for MHTriU and I have been wanting to play it forever-- yet it sits there untouched)
God of War (not my bag and was never on my radar)

    slow time of year indeed...

I'm probably getting the new Gears game because recently my mother-in-law asked for a birthday gift idea and I froze, Christmas Story-like, and mumbled "Gears of War."

Apropos of nothing, I just noticed I had accidentally typed "Bears of War" and had a moment of wistful dreams of what might have been.

I got tired of the God of War schtick--it's torture-porn-violence and misogyny. I hate prequels and the Gears of War is one.

Or perhaps could be in some alternate universe.

HA! And I'm totally okay with this, considering a decade ago (heck, five years ago) when I'd often feel like I had nothing to play or even look forward to for months on end! :)

To the topic, I still have God of War 3 sitting on my bookshelf with the shrink wrap still on it from an Amazon impulse buy last summer, and the last Gears of War game I played to completion was the first one (which I adored) and the second one I only got about 2 hours in before realizing I was sort of over that gameplay. I'm really more of a strategy gamer anyway, shooters and platformers don't grab me like they used to (with exceptions such as Bioshock or Far Cry 3, of course).

I'm so old school that this is my immediate thought when someone mentions a bear of war.

OMG I totally know that chit from a game that I played when I was ... probably in the 5th or 6th grade. What is that!? I know I've held that or something very similar before when playing a board game. Some sort of DND wargame, maybe?

Gears of war always sounded too cliched like halo so I've never played any of them. I tried the first god of war and didn't find it any fun after an hour so I never looked at the series further.

Very cool, I've been meaning to check that iOS version out actually.

I was actually thinking of something called Battlesystem, which looks like it came out in 1985 and was probably when I played it. Very complicated, none of my friends at the time ever did manage to get that entirely figured out.

Gods of Gear to Titan in 14 posts. Impressive.

If you read the "hardest level" thread you'll understand why I'm not playing God of War, and I doubt I made it half way through Gears 3 (my first, having picked up a 360 relatively late in the cycle), so no reason to try a new one. Tom Bissel did a great interview on the Brainy Gamer podcast, however, so I may try it out eventually. Maybe after Bulletstorm and Vanquish.

As much as I'm happy he's able to work on a big franchise, I'm afraid it doesn't really show. Gears of War: Judgement uses writing the same way a porno movie uses convincing line delivery.

I'm playing the Gears of War: Judgment campaign on Insane right now. As in, we're in a firefight while I type this post.

Didn't even realize there was a new Gears of War, even though I actually really enjoyed the series (played them coop with my son and a bit of horde mode now and then). Never had any idea what the heck was happening with the story in those damn games, but I loved them all the same.

Part of my affection for the series is probably that my son does a really good impression of Marcus. The running gag is that Marcus and Don are having a sleepover, and Marcus is having trouble going to sleep. "Dom, can you get me a drink of water?", that sort of thing. You kind of have to be there.

I would skip the first game. I think it essentially pioneered its formula of popping out of obtrusively placed waist-high cover and shooting at stuff with occasional chainsaw action, but for my tastes it just does not do anywhere near enough to break up the monotonous nature of that formula. I made it no more than halfway through and possibly not that far so it might be it gets more interesting in the late game but it's such a slog getting there. So why bother? Gears 2 has a lot more set-pieces, distinctive weapons, enemies that force tactical changes, etc. And the story is about as gripping as tissue paper for at least the first two installments, so you're not missing anything in that regard. I'd also play it coop if you can. (One of several reasons I've never gotten around to Gears 3 and certainly won't be picking up Judgment anytime soon is that my console coop partner and I have tended to play boardgames instead lately.)

Burnout for me as well. I really like both "GoW" franchises, but too many have come out too quickly.

Everyone needs to take a page from the book of Rockstar and treat their franchises more like GTA. GTA IV was released in 2008! Now there's a lot of hunger for a new one.
