    Google account compromised?

I woke up this morning to 4 emails from someone about soccer practice dates in August. The at the bottom of the email there was some message saying that I had gotten these emails because I had requested it from Google calendar and if I didn't want the notifications I should go to Google calendar and change my settings. I didn't give it a second thought and just marked them as spam. Then this morning I opened up my calendar on my android phone and found that these dates had been marked in my calendar! WTF? Has my account been compromised or is it possible for other people to add events to your calendar in Google? I'm wondering whether or not I should be changing my password.

Look in the very bottom right of the Gmail index page: there's a link for details on account activity, which will list where you've been logged in from. If it's an obvious hack, that should help diagnose it. Calendar probably has the same thing.

I went to the webpage on my phone and when I click on the event I have an option to respond so it looks like it's an invitation rather than someone accessing my account. I guess it's a matter of finding a setting which doesn't allow anyone to send me event invitations. I changed my password anyways just to be safe.

Yeah someone just sent you a calendar invite.

Consider turning on two-factor authentication, if you can deal with the initial setup annoyance factor.

Yes, someone else can send you calendar items. In fact, it's so fancy that someone can send you just a date and a time and Google will try to parse it and offer to add it. If you don't pay attention and just click "ok", you'll get all sorts of things in your calendar.

That's the thing that got me though, I didn't approve anything. It just showed up in my calendar by itself.

Ahh, I found it. There's a setting to automatically add invitations to your calendar. It would be nice if it only did that from people in your address book or something like that. Oh well, crisis over!

2-factor is great until you need to access google docs from a friend's house and you left your phone at work. :p

Put a copy of your backup two-factor codes in your wallet.
