A computer for every square metre of land area on this planet

Charlie Stross has an interesting blog post up about the possibility (near certainty, according to his argument) that Moore's Law and Koomey's Law will lead to tiny, low-power devices that can blanket the world in computing power. He mentions both obvious and not-so-obvious implications, from loss of privacy due to ubiquitous monitoring to the elimination of traffic signage to highly accurate weather prediction. All this could start happening in the next couple of decades.

Couple interesting things in the comments, too. For instance, #4, who brings up the question of what software will run on all those devices. Or #8, where it is pointed out that all those little devices could generate energy as well as computing power, which could be a revolution all on its own.

Not to mention where do we get all the raw materials for all of those devices. Mining is the new oil drilling.

Apparently you can make anything out of graphene and it's lighter, stronger, shinier, happier, and more nutritious than any other substance ever.

Seriously, stop with the graphene already.

Duh, the computers will find it.
