This stupid Steam sale has, like most people, gotten me over my head in games to play. It seems that some of them just need a controller. I have never used a controller on a PC or laptop before.
I would prefer wireless but I suppose wired would be fine if they just suck. The problem is that I have no clue as to which ones are good or bad.
Any advice is appreciated.

There really is no better option than the xbox gamepad. I suggest just buying the wired version, unless your computer is plugged into your TV and you sit on the couch.
I do like my Xbox controller too. So just a standard controller works, nothing special?
I had no idea. And I have 4 of them already anyway, but maybe an extra one to put in my laptop bag.
WalTer, yeah, you just need the version that has the wireless receiver for Windows. The controller itself is a stock Xbox 360 controller, but unfortunately, the PC USB wireless receiver isn't sold separately.
You can also use the wired version; it just plugs directly into a USB port.

Also, even thought it has a USB connector, do NOT buy the play and charge kit for this purpose. It only charges, it doesn't send data, so you still need the wireless receiver. And it charges poorly such that it kills batteries in under a year.
Ok well looks like wired is much less annoying. PC is not hooked to my TV and otherwise I will be on my Laptop so other than lack of wires, wireless is not really necessary.

Some games actually work better with the wired 360 controller than the wireless one. I think the 1st couple of Assassin's Creed games were fiddly that way.
I know that my wireless mouse on my laptop works well but I am not convinced that it is as sharp as a wired one. I have not tried raiding in WoW or playing GW2 with it yet but I can see it maybe being an issue. Plus wireless the the batteries and the separate dongle that is not really a dongle...or just plug it in and go...
I ended up grabbing the wired one from Amazon- yay for Prime.

Only caveat I have with those is that the drivers can be a pain to install. It can use the official MS drivers, but it needs to be forced to use them through Device Manager. (at least that was my experience helping a friend get his working)

Had no issues with it so far, but I do not game a whole lot with gamepads.
The wired 360 controller has SIGNIFICANTLY better driver support (through 3rd party drivers) unless things changed radically in the last couple years. The wireless 360 controller absolutely eats batteries up. If you plan to use it, you MUST get some sort of recharger or else you will be going broke even with minimal use.
Still, if you want a gamepad that requires the least setup to work perfectly with games, the 360 controller is without peer.
As I said, I ended up with a Microsoft 360 wired controller. On my laptop and my desktop- both Windows 7, I plugged it in, waited a minute or so and I was ready to go- no fuss no muss.
Works great.
