Speaking of Google, Gmail interface question

Is there any app or mod or something that you can use to improve the Gmail interface?

I like switching to a web based mail system, as opposed to Outlook (which I used for many, many years) but I hate the interface.

Specifically things that I can routinely do in most email applications, such as just view unread messages (I have to enter a command line in Gmail, rather that just click on View Unread Messages) or sort by author, or sort by subject, and many other options. Heck, I can do most of those even in other webmail apps like Yahoo Mail.

I have so much mail in Gmail I have to try to switch again, but surely there must be a "Better Gmail" application out there?

Have you tried to use the quick links option in Gmail, you can save any search command into a link, I have one for unread messages and some other custom searches.

I thought View Unread was one of the default filters/sorts available in Gmail? I'm using it, and I know for sure that I never had to type in a search for it.

You can Select Unread but all it does is highlight them - it doesn't remove the unread ones from your view.

Yeah, I know a couple of ways I can type in command lines to do it, it is just so backwards in UI that they don't have a button built in to View Unread.

Or sort by subject. Or sort by name. Etc.

Select the dropdown on the inbox, and choose 'Unread First'. It will sort unread items to the top, and then in a section beneath that, read items will appear.

Unfortunately it doesn't include a "View Unread Messages" button.

Ah, OK, still doesn't fix a host of other issues, but that let me set up an unread mail quick link. Thanks.

Also have you tried the new Hotmail, I know Hotmail is dirty word and MS should get a new brand name for their mail service, but I started using a Live account for backup for Gmail and have to say that the service has come a long way and while I still prefer Gmail there are some features in the new Hotmail that Gmail should copy, and there you can sort messages by author, or by subject, also there is already and unread link

Where is that? I am looking at dropdowns, and I don't see that option anywhere?

EDIT: OK found that option in Settings.

When you put your mouse over "Inbox" on the left, an arrow appears for a drop down list of quick "Inbox Type" configuration options.
