My guess is that it will turn out to be superior, but in no way comparable to a real keyboard. Which is perfectly fine-- that's appropriate to tap out a quick email, but not for real work.
I can definitely see how just having tactile feedback on just placing fingers in the proper locations could make a big difference. One of my biggest source of iPad typing errors is when my fingers are slightly off, and just having a set of slight dimples on a felt cover would probably help out a lot.

They aren't still sitting on a boatload of cash? I thought they were sitting on $50 billion at one point.

It does seem like their attempt to buy the marketplace worked at least somewhat with the XBox. I'm not sure if they'll ever get good return on their investment, but they stuck with it and certainly have a very big seat at the table. They might be able to do the same thing with tablets.

MS isn't in the red, they're just leveraging their office revenue to push xbox and mobile. It's like the guy that owns a successful bar, then opens a restaurant, which doesn't do well, so he moves liquor from the bar to the restaurant to make the books look better. He'd be better off just sticking with the bar, but he wants to be a bigshot.

History has shown Microsoft has the will to lose money to gain market share. All that remains to be seen, is if it also has the money.

History has also shown that committing to Microsoft is a sucker's game.

If they don't get bored and abruptly discontinue the product/tech altogether (see Bob, UltimateTV, Games for Windows Live, Zune, ActiMates, WebTV, MS Money, the first Xbox, Ensemble Studios, Vista Sidebar Apps, Sidewinder controllers, PlaysForSure [which in a delicious irony won't play on Zune], or Kin), they will usually get it stable and functioning with the promised feature-set by the second (well, usually third) iteration (see Windows, Xbox 360 Slim, Ford Sync, Internet Explorer, Direct X).

In summary: I'll believe it when it gets released and gets upgraded a few times.

Nope. I have Win 8 installed on a touchscreen Dell Inspiron notebook and the onscreen keyboard in the Win 8 preview is about 34,039% better than the one in Win 7.

Here's a pic of the version in last year's developer preview.

Yes, that keyboard is invoked in both metro and on the desktop. I think there might be some changes since the RP to get it to invoke automatically more reliably too. It was a problem in the RP where you had to use the Settings charm, and Keyboard from there, to get the touch keyboard to show up.

You can have it overlayed on top of whatever's on the desktop, or have the entire Desktop resize into the available space above the keyboard.

That's good news about the keyboard. Hopefully Win 8 will recognize if it's on a touch enabled device with no external keyboard present, and tapping in any text field, Metro or Desktop, will immediately invoke it.

Dude, they removed it from all their comparison tables and everything. It's dead, let it go.

So they erase all traces of its existence until they get more in stock? What?

That is what he is saying, yes.

At this point I doubt he'd accept a direct phonecall from Bezos saying "yo holmes, the DX be dead".

Bezos talks in ebonics because he's bald, you see.

The social dynamics of forums get weird sometimes. Starlight, you made a prediction about the Kindle DX, and how they wouldn't discontinue it because it's too awesome. They discontinued it. You don't need to deny this, you can just be all "man, this is a crazy decision, the DX was super-great and nothing else fills its niche. I'm keeping mine for as long as it lasts."

There, your belief in its awesomeness remains unchallenged, and you don't have to sit here sounding increasingly ridiculous as you deny reality and then sit there making childish taunts. So, y'know, that's an option for you.

There, reality now reflects your demands. (Bets on you complaining about that in 3,2,1...)

Speaking of erasing all traces of its existence, Starlight just deleted all his posts denying the DX would be discontinued. Weird.

I was wondering what the fuck was going on. That's pretty lame, Starlight.

Man, I thought you meant just from this page. But he deleted all of them from the entire thread, even posts from several months ago.

    Overreact much?

    Hahaha. That's pretty funny.

Oh no! I was wrong about something meaningless. I better go delete all traces of my wrongness!

I have a Kindle DX. I use it for reading manga, apart from normal books.

OH, it's a script. Yes, that makes it far less stupid and childish then.

Apparently, he needs to backtrack and delete his posts often enough to need to have a script handy to help ease the load.

FYI : You're in full throated, arm waving, running around the room denial and backtracking mode right now. You might want to step back and take a breath. This is hilarious, true, but you look ridiculous.

So you're being an asshole and are doing the equivalent of following and screaming at me because I didn't want a pointless argument. Fine. Pointless argument time!

You and your Stusshole are calling victory before the next generation of eInk screens are out, and you've defaulted on your bet. Pay up!
Oh, and fuck off to Kotaku where you belong, your accuracy record matches!

    ...

THAT is what you're saying I'm doing, want it? Alternatively, don't ask me to sink to Stusser's level.
