Join the Starbase Orion (iPhone) multiplayer donnybrook

The new update for Starbase Orion, the MOO-alike for the iPhone, just added a whole mess of new features, including various options for multiplayer games. The game's website is here and the iTunes page to buy it for $8 (!) is here.

So who's up for some epic 4X sci-fi asynchronous multiplayer? Add "tomwchick" (make sure to get my middle initial in there) as a friend on Gamecenter and post in this thread. Then we'll work out the specifics and get down to a little galactic conquest.

I'd like to play, as long as it's OK that I don't know what I am doing. I've had the game for a while but haven't really dug into it. I am Josemas99 on gamecenter.

Josemas, yes, please play! I've only messed around with it a little myself. I've run a full test game against the easy AI just to get used to the interface, but otherwise I don't really know what I'm doing.

Only with caveats. It's surprisingly full-featured, but it can be dry and finicky.

Also there's no diplomacy, which is a big part of what makes 4X sci-fi work. Who ever heard of just flying out into space and not trying to get along with some of the aliens? What is this, Galaga? So I guess it's not technically full-featured at all.

I'm in as well. I got this when it came out and played a single test game against the AI, but that's it.

Well I'm always up for a donnybrook, though I suck at 4x games. But I'm kind of on the fence about this, is it really $8 good? Couldn't we play like, Ticket to Ride? That's only $2.

I think games are currently limited to four human players, so we'll give this thread through tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) to accumulate interested players, and then we'll divide them into games.

Make sure to note your Gamecenter name if you haven't already.

Last Q, is it playable on Iphone, or would I need an Ipad to enjoy this...

Some games get very finicky on such a small screen..

Janster, that's part of why I say it's finicky. I'm playing on the iPhone and it can definitely be a PITA if you want to move, say, one farmer over to research on the empire screen. It's certainly played on the iPhone, but I imagine it fares much better on the iPad.

As for whether it's worth $8, I have no idea. That's between you guys and your wallets. :)

Thank for the heads up, I do like the idea of this game, but on my Iphone I think I will just be troubled with the small screen. My rather large hands doesn't help either...

If I get an IPAD I might definetly pick up this tho.

I have had the game for a while but only tried playing it for the first time last night. I'm still not 100% sold on it though. It is the best turn based space game on the iOS that's for sure.

I somehow stumbled on to Starbase Orion awhile ago, and noticed that they updated it a lot. I finally started playing when the latest patch came out. It's neat, but boy do those space monsters hit hard.

I'm totally up for for a game! I am "BaronVonRocket" on game center.

Mark L, can you confirm your Gamecenter name with me. I think I know which account is you, but I want to be sure. You can PM me if you don't want to reveal it publicly.

At this point, we've got six players, and I think our matches will be a little snappier and, uh, interestingly balanced if we play three-player games. I'll break us up into groups and game specify some game settings this evening. And, of course, anyone else who wants to play is welcome to post his name and I'll set you up with a game.

I have had the game for a while, but I'm still trying to figure it out. I'll be watching this thread though. Seconding the play by play.

Okay, so here are the two games by players' forum names (with Gamecenter names in parentheses). I'd recommend not making custom races, since I suspect you can "break" the multiplayer balance that way. Boojum, can you kick off the second game? Go to multiplayer, select Custom Game, and then you can sent out invites.

    Alpha Game
    tomwchick (Tom Chick)
    Mark L
    Josemass99 (Josemas)

    Beta Game
    MadOverlord (Boojum)
    DeForrestation (DeForrestation)
    BaronVonRocket (Crater)

I'll add more games as people show up (stand by, Peter!). Folks are also free to set up their own games, of course!

Excellent, I'm well acquainted with being beaten up by Boojum, and baronvonrocket can join the party.

Also, does anyone have a link to a printable manual? Switching to the ingame one is less than ideal.

Ah, okay. Invite sent on Gamecenter. Once you accept it, I'll fire us up a game.

I show you on my friends list already, I think from Ascension. Just got Mark L's invite.

Good luck! This should be interesting.

Oops, I see you now. I hate how Gamecenter shows real names in favor of actual Gamecenter tags. It makes it hard to keep up with some of you. Okay, I'm off to host the game.

All right, Alpha Game is underway. Large map, regular game speed. May the best man -- err, species -- win.
