    Blizzcon 2012 cancelled

Blizzard has announced today that Blizzcon 2012 is cancelled and instead they will do an esports event in Asia.
Does this indicated they just will have nothing to announce for 2013 or does it suggest that they believe they will be still pushing to release mop , d3 and hots in Q3 and can't afford the distraction.
I was hoping that d3 would be out in jan / feb but it now looks like they are still making major changes so spring seems more likely. It kind of sucks for those of us who got the yearly pass thinking that we would get at least d3 to tide us over till mop hits

It means that they got tired of holding an event every year where the major reveal was how they changed the shadows of certain Diablo characters so they didn't look as pixely.

My guess is that Blizzcon is very disruptive to development schedules. Blizz has the WoW expansion, Titan, SC2, and D3 in development. I hope D3 is out before the fall, but even if it's a summer release there may be some intense post-release bug squashing and development.

As popular an event as Blizzcon was, and as expensive as tickets end up, I believe they have always stated it was a money-losing endeavor. So if they don't feel its getting enough marketing value or worth the "feel good" emotions imparted to fans, I'm not surprised to see it fall off the schedule.

They may just not have anything significant to announce this year. MoP should either be done or close to it, Titan is probably going to be under wraps for a while, and Diablo 3 should be out already. I don't really keep touch with the Starcraft franchise, so I don't know if there will be anything new to reveal there either.

Ah well. I had wanted to go at least once especially since it was always held very close to where I live. But the fact that the tickets were pretty expensive and they generally sold out in 15 seconds, I never got in.

That said, I remember reading last year that the biggest applause getter was the announcement of "new water" in WoW. Oh it turned out nicely but ...new water is a big announcement? That and since Pandaria is already announced, D3 is chugging along, how much content can they have for an entire weekend?

You did get an awesome WoW pet though.

Anyone still thinking Activision still has no say in Blizzard's matters?
Blizzard did it for the fans like Quakecon is done by id for their supporters.

I bet enough people would attend Blizzcon even without some new shit unveiled.
They will go to meet their guildies, hang out with their favourite developers and have some fun.
Just throw in some WoW pet or something to make them happy.

Goddamn industry is going down the toilet fast. :(

Yes, because they don't. Not everything disappointing that happens is Activision's fault.

Blizzard has skipped a year before when they had no new things to announce or push, and I see no reason to think this year is any different. If anything, they're cancelling because they have far too much on their plate (WoW expansion, Diablo 3, Diablo 3 expansion, StarCraft 2 expansions #1 and #2, Titan MMO) to also juggle a major convention this year.

Yeah, there was no convention in 2006. They have three products slated for release this year, which is pretty huge by Blizzard's standards, so all hands are on deck for that.

I just hope it means that both MoP and D3 will be out by August...

D3 definitely will be, MoP should be, or so close that they can't take the time off for the hassle of Blizzcon. It definitely makes sense for them to skip it this year: they have 2 games coming out in/near the first half of the year, and nothing else to announce, so there wouldn't be much to hype if they had run it like normal.

Or as a Blizzard guy put it:
In a year when we're working to release multiple titles (knock on wood) it makes sense to focus our efforts. Also with multiple game releases we just wonder if we'd be at a point with any of them where we'd have anything really big or new or cool to talk about.

I remember when companies just made good games. This let us make the perfect "esport" bullshit can rot. Every month is a money losing endeavor for some of these titles from Blizzard as they fine tune their "esportage". I doubt that should trouble them too much.

Seriously, this whole "esport" thing is a joke. Some of the best games of all time aren't fine tuned for some twitchy non-sense. In fact, I kinda miss some of the experimentation of classic games. Now, it is all Command and Conquer like clones with some bullshit fine tuning for "esports". Worse yet, the corporate side has kicked in, like music and movie clonage, we get a bunch of the same crap with better shadows.

Sorry you mean the same Activision that pretty much copied the Blizzcon idea to make a con for their flagship Call of Duty franchise? That Activision?
