The New Year's Resolutions / Intentions / Vague Desires thread

Some say that making a new year's resolution is a great way to ensure the thing never happens. Well, FUCK those people. This thread is for those who still retain enough optimism to consider resolutions worth making. Or at least for those who have some kind of plan for 2012 that they want to make happen, and tell the rest of us about.

    My main goals:

    - Get back to hacking on Holofunk, with the goal of performing at a TED or TEDx conference in late 2012 / early 2013.

    - Spend at least 30 minutes every other day playing Rocksmith with my new cheapie-but-fun Epiphone Special. I asked for this for Christmas and got it, so I want to make use of it and actually learn some guitar (beyond the minimal alphabet-chords I currently know).

    - Start a Rippetoe strength program and get to where I can squat 200 lbs. (I'm 160 lbs and ectomorphic, so I'm not gonna be too gonzo on this.) This will be all the more challenging because I have totally slacked off for weeks now....

And, of course, keep up my current level of awesomeness (whatever that may be) as a husband, father, coworker, Artemis-session-organizer, and church-goer.*

    How about you?

*Unitarian Universalist, if you were wondering.

To poop at least twice a day!

Eh, also to start a blog and focus on writing more. It's good practice, and it'd be more convenient what with the greater picture limit than here.

Thanks to my Qt3 Secret Santa I got a book about overcoming procrastination that I had been putting off buying (ha!). I've read about half the book now and it has really opened my eyes on why I do the things I do to avoid doing stuff (hint: telling a procrastinator to "work harder" or "just do it" completely misses the point), and I look forward to procrastinating less in 2012.

    Also, this.

Thanks for the link. I knew exercise is important but looking at the research makes it somehow more motivating than just hearing your doctor say "you should exercise". This is my top priority, with eating healthy food.

And what's the name of the procrastination book?

Learn to make friends and influence people.
Get some physical therapy out of the way that will give me the full use of my left hand again.
    Finish something I start.

Become a better 3D artist. Won't be hard.

Get myself into the 220's weight wise by Spring. I'm in the 230's now but my body is settling into a groove and I need to knock it loose!

Last year my New Year's resolution was to stop making New Year's resolutions.

    I'm not breaking it now.

I'll do the same one I did last year. Buy no more games until the Steam summer sale.

Provided Skyrim is a repeat sale tomorrow.

See as many 2012 films as possible. Sadly, I didn't see too many this year.

I try not to make resolutions, but this year, what I'd like to get done is:

    - Finally have my problematic leg examined so I can get it treated
    - Be more social with friends I'd like to see more of
    - Save enough money to move in with my girlfriend this summer (and in general)
    - Continue to improve myself as best I can

To write every day. Or at least every day during January, which I'm dubbing JanNoWriMo. Or maybe MyNoWriMo?

I'm also going to drastically cut sugar.

Last year I resolved to completely cut flavored sodas, diet or otherwise. I kept that up for about two months and then went back to drinking diet pepsis all the time. In August I resolved to give them up again and with the exception of a couple of ginger ales on Christmas, I haven't had a single carbonated beverage that wasn't just a soda water I made with my Sodastream.

I think I'd much rather have a resolution I fail on quickly and then come back to and stick with rather than one I burn out on a few months in. So while I imagine my resolution to avoid sugar won't last past my birthday in February, I hope that by this time next year I'll have cut my sugar intake drastically.

Hey! Last year I managed 3x5 200 lb Ripptoe squats, once, which were kind of my unattainably difficult goal from the start of the year. Took me until about September :) Got my weight up to 150 lbs too :)

I'm not big on resolutions either, so chalk these up to things I would like to do a day at a time.

    - Disconnect my brain from its strange obsession with sugar. I have lost about 14 pounds in the last six months, but want to get down to 170. How I eat is the answer, because more exercise isn't necessary or advisable!

    - Get a new job that is rewarding (it won't be as rewarding as my current one is, financially, so I mean in the other ways!) so I have something to do with myself once I leave my current job in April

Quit drinking the way I'm drinking right now.

Get my left arm fixed and back to 100%.

    Win National Championship.

Travel to South America, beat current World Champion.

    Quit my job.

Create new job teaching, writing a book, making a DVD, and getting enough sponsorship to break into 3-gun and become dominant.

    Get my fucking bathroom remodeled.

    2011 can kiss my ass.

    This.

Also, my resolution last year was to drop 50 lbs (from 200). My resolutions this year include stacking on some muscle (already doing that, though) and making big strides in my professional life. Making more friends would be good, too.

Get my intermediate theory certificate in, surprise, beekeeping. (two more exams).

Get off using vb and onto c# and get better at UI design/implementation.

Get back into cycling more and lose some weight.

Finally kick smoking and drink less booze.

Lose weight, get my shit together, date more, write more, maybe drink not so much.

Basically: less Charlie Sheen, more Richard Feynman.

    This.

Also, start going to the gym again three times a week. No specific goals. Just do my best and add weights when I can.

I want to finish my fucking video project. I made incredible strides in that this week and I think I could have it all done by the end of January, assuming January is not the hell-month it looks like it will be. It will be so fucking nice to actually finish a big project like this.

I want to lose weight. If I drop ten pounds, I'm thinking we start seriously trying for a baby.

I want to finally get my kitchen redone. I've been complaining about it for six years, time to actually do something about it.

I want everyone to be healthy and for 2012 to not be so god damn stressful.
