    3x3: best swimming pool scenes

Having been recently subjected to a truly awful example of a swimming pool scene, we got to thinking about how many great pool scenes there are in movies. Thus, this 3x3 about our favorite pool scenes, which discussion launches at the 1:37 mark of the Qt3 Movie Podcast of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

    Tom Chick
    3. Hesher: throwing junk into the pool
    2. Burnt Offerings: father and son horseplay in the pool gets a little out of hand
    1. Let the Right One In: enough said

    Kelly Wand
    3. Let the Right One In: enough said again
    2. The Human Centipede (First Sequence): Dr. Laser's magical pool cover
    1. They Came from Within aka Shivers: don't want to spoil it

    Dingus
    3. The Descendants: dad gives his daughter bad news
    2. Rushmore: Ronny and Donny's birthday party, Herman Blume, golf balls
    1. Let the Right One In: seriously? real original guys

So what are your favorite swimming pool scenes? Hopefully you're smarter than we are and can think of something other than your favorite movie from 2008.

Fast Times and Wild Things. Is there something sexier than a woman climbing a pool ladder? I think not.

The remake wasn't too bad, either. Annette O'Toole looked fine.

    3. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and by extension every scene from every 80s movie with a hot chick climbing out of a pool
    2. Caddyshack
    1. Poltergeist

    Honorable Mention: Altered States

    "Spaulding! NO!"

Boogie Nights, starting at 2:30 is one of my favorite tracking shots, as well as a perfect intersection of music and film.

To echo: Good one. My wife and I just watched this (rewatch for me) because TCMHD was going nuts with the Tournier/Lewton pics during Halloween. Goddamn that movie is still awesome, and that pool scene is fucking incredible.

Excellent picks so far. No one said Showgirls? Good.

I AM A GOLDEN GOD from Almost Famous.

Getting a Mogwai wet at the pool in Gremlins, although i may be conflating it with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Unbreakable, because swimming pool covers were Bruce Willis' Kryptonite.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High was the first in my mind, too.

I want to say Cocoon because I remember a swimming pool scene but I don't REALLY remember the details all that well. And I can't think of any others.

OH! The "Nihalist" scene, Big Lebowski.

Christmas Vacation Clark imaging the innocent fun of having the pool in the backyard before it turns not-so-innocent.

    That was in Christmas Vacation?

I remember the pool scene from plain, old Vacation, definitely.

What? No love for Sexy Beast? With the boulder in the pool?

I would link a picture, but the actor is wearing such a tight yellow speedo, you can tell his religion.

History of the World Part I-

Nothing is working! Send in the nuns!"

Only one I could think of that wasn't already mentioned, but my other two were Caddy Shack and Fast Times

People have already named mine, but anyway.

    3. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
    2. Unbreakable
    1. Let the Right One In

    Honorable mentions:

Cocoon, because the swimming pool is a central focus of the movie.
    Wild Things. Goddamn.
Does the moon pool in The Abyss count?

Syriana: you know there's a problem with the fitting on the light in the pool but the only hint you get that someone has been electrocuted is the house lights dimming for a moment where the kid's dad is. Understated, nuanced, horrifying.

The Legacy. Mostly a boring movie with a very swimming-underwater-phobia inducing scene.

    Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

    Nightmare on Elm Street 2

Does that waterlogged section of the ship in Alien: Resurrection count as a pool?

I hated that movie for the most part, but I remember the swimming aliens being rather graceful.

Scorpio's first kill in Dirty Harry was the first one that popped into my mind. Great building of tension and dread.

3.Harold and Maude- really just a quick joke but a great character establishing moment. Harold's mom swims a lap right pass one of Harold's fake suicide attempts while Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto 1 is played in the background.
    2. It's a Wonderful Life- Tis the season.
    1. Sunset Boulevard- Billy Wilder was originally going to start the film in a morgue, panning past a line of bodies and when the camera landed on one, the body in a voiceover would explain how they die with the camera not bothering to stop for any of them to finish their story before it landed on William Holden. Wilder decided it would be too corny and we ended up with what I think is a better start.

Right, it was Vacation that had the motel pool scene with Billy Joel's ex-wife and the old guy from Community. But it was Christmas Vacation that had a daydream sequence about the pool he was going to buy with his Christmas bonus.
