Some more silly ... where is this 3 GB texture pack? Under DLC or is it a mod or ... ??
And remember, as DLC, once you choose to download it, Steam will associate that "DLC" with Skyrim on your account forever. You can disable or enable it through the Skyrim launcher, but that extra 3GB will always be stuck to the game files. If you delete Skyrim someday and then later decide to reinstall it, that DLC will download as well.
Yeah, that particular location doesn't show much change. I see a much greater difference in most areas.
Yeah, it's not huge. You can see it best on the tabletop and the wall on the left. My shield also shows a bit of the higher-res texture. You'll notice the object texture on the skull doesn't appear to change at all.
I don't place a huge premium on the 3GB difference, so it's worth it to me, but YMMV. Then again, I'm one of those people that thought the game looked really good before anyway.
Can someone post an image comparison that would compel someone on the fence to get the DLC? :)
I have. I started a new game and could see in the rocks and the wood textures it looked better, the weapon in my hand and my lizard-like off hand looks noticably better as well. Plus, can't complain about the price.

Yeah, I don't get it either. It's FREE? How can you be on the fence? It certainly doesn't make things WORSE, just download it and try it for ones self, I say.
It's not going to be like if you pulled down the DX11 and Ultra Res pack for Crysis 2 or anything, and it still doesn't make it look at good as The Witcher 2 looks in some areas, but it takes an already nice looking game and gives it a little extra something.
Well, I think any value judgement of the HD pack is going to be subjective. Obviously, I do see a difference, I just don't think it's "much greater" than normal. It's enough that the 3GB price doesn't phase me, but I think anyone looking for a night and day OMG change is going to be in for a disappointment.
Eh, I'm at work and won't be downloading it until tonight at the earliest. was just hoping for some eye candy. :)
Those SS are too far away from the textures to notice a difference. When you're actually playing the game and actually moving around and looking floors, tables, shelves, etc., you notice it immediately and they look a lot better.
Of course, there's the whole fucking with your existing texture mods problem to deal with, but aside from that it's a no-brainer.
Downloaded and played last night. My save game was in a dungeon, and I immediately noticed the Dwarven shield in my off hand was much more detailed and the runes on my enchanted Skyforged Steel Sword were much clearer and more defined. Lydia's entire armor set looked cleaner and more defined as well. Many of the rock and wall textures no longer looked melded together, but had a more distinct appearance. The Silver Hand guys I fought also looked crisper and more detailed. I didn't make it outside yet (big dungeon), but honestly I'm already loving the change and noticed ZERO performance issues. Given that it was free DLC that only cost me an hour of download time I'd say it's a huge success and a must have for every Skyrim player.
I noticed the DLC listing says you should have a quad core - has anyone had issues running the textures with a dual core?

Again, it looks better in action.
This is awesome. So glad I went PC over PS3.
Downloading ... 7% complete. Yikes...
So is Skyrimnexus.com still the place to get mods with the update and the kit out?
Nexus has a front-end that's great for searching and categorization. It also has a ton of feedback and support. It'll probably take a while for the Steam app to really challenge it.
Is the Creation kit itself on Steam?
I would say that if you're searching for a mod, Skyrimnexus is the place to go. With no real search function, the Workshop is kind of a PITA to navigate.
As for installing and keeping up with a simple mod, especially ones that don't require any kind of deep scripting or custom assets, I'll probably rely on the Workshop. It's nice to just hit "subscribe" and not worry about it again.
Ah ok ...I will sheepishly admit I have not fired up Steam yet. Silly Star Wars game has kept me away.
I walked into the first town and was struck by how nice looking things were. It was always a nice looking game though, so it could just be a placebo effect. Some textures actually DO look about the same, but others just look starkly better. Like the stone floor in this building, for example. I don't believe I ever noticed the floor looking that nice before?

Has anyone found or seen a lighting mod for torches or spells? I'd love to replace the ambient lights with more dynamic ones.
So I couldn't resist getting the Creation Kit and making Destruction magic damage scale off your Destruction skill. The question I have now is what it should max out at. Right now I have it set to scale at 1% per skill point so at max level it will double your damage. Somewhat amusingly it stacks multiplicatively with the Augment perks, so 100 skill will double your final damage from 150% to 300% if you have both levels of an elemental augment perk. I'd welcome any opinions on the matter!
