Ryan is talking about HDR then. Yes, the HDR in this game is a bit overdone, but so far there's no way to adjust is AFAIK.

I've updated my version (link) to HDR 1.8, which is the version that is updated with ENBSeries' Patch 9.

ENBSeries is on its beta release for Skyrim (this HDR mod everyone is using is actually using functions that were built for Deus Ex), but I don't recommend installing it. Big performance hits and crashing going on, for me anyways, unless there's a lot of fiddling done.

The volume in the game is really low. Normally I keep my computer speakers at about 40% which, for most games, is plenty loud in my small home office... when I play Skyrim I have to max my computer speakers to 100% and still have a hard time hearing some of the dialogue, etc. in the game. I have all the in-game audio settings maxed out.

I don't think low audio is normal either. There are some ini settings that perhaps you inadvertently changed? That said, Bethesda games are notorious for sound issues, so it wouldn't surprise me if some people are having problems. At least it sounds like it can be worked around. I generally have subtitles on anyway, since otherwise it's hard to catch all of the lore, and I don't like waiting for most of the generic dialogue to be spoken.

The audio is very very low... There should be an ini setting for "mastervolume" or "masteraudio" set to 1, set it to 3 or 4 (i.e., three or four times as loud as default).

For anyone with an nVidia card that might want some extra performance with their anti-aliasing, use these settings (ignore the Ambient Occlusion stuff if you don't want that):

    http://www.geforce.com/Active/en_US/...edSettings.png

I got back a couple frames per second from forcing it on through nVidia Inspector. FXAA can be kept on in the Skyrimprefs.ini, of course. I think it's the CSAA method that produces the best performance while maintaining MSAA levels of quality.

The anisotropic filtering also looks better than the game's setting as it applies itself to your water (though the difference won't be big if you already have the higher res water textures).

I went from constand 40-50FPS to single an avg of around 25 FPS and lots of time sin single digits.

Im using 1.8 of the HDR mod with Pogos settings and a ini tweeks to imrove shadows.

Remove the D3D9.dll and use the launcher to start with a clean slate of settings, then load up the game. See if you still have issues. If you don't, put the D3D9.dll back in, see if you have issues.

If not, re-apply your shadow settings.

I've actually raised this value to 20, and now the output volume is acceptable... at a Windows headphone level of 60. Whereas I'm normally running at 20-30. I also had to turn down the relative level of music which is way too loud compared to other sounds (i.e. it's the only sound that's output at a decent level!), even though the music default level in the game's volume controls is already very low. Sound mixing is definitely utterly broken in the game.

By the way, I had no more crashes or texture errors after switching to Skyrim4GB. Boggles the mind that Bethesda ships a game that's compiled for large address mode, requires large address mode to run properly... and then doesn't set the large address flag.

I have read on some forum, that the memory a 32 bits game have is 2GB - "Video Ram", so if you have a big fat graphic card, with 1GB of memory, the game is limited to 1 GB of RAM. With large address mode the video ram is not substracted. So your game have 3 GB of RAM. From no-LLA to LLA your app pass from 1GB to 3GB.

    Before
    = 2GB (32 bits limit) - 1GB (vram)
    After
    = 3GB (32 bits limit with LLA) - 0 (vram don't substract)

I don't know if this is true.

A lot of games that do streaming of content could benefit from this, as bigger cache of content means less streaming.

It ended up that my AA settings were too high in the nvidia control panel.

Boris (maker of ENBSeries) owns some people that think his mod looks too colorful:

I like his comparison of Skyrim's completely unrealistic milky unsaturated haziness to actual photographs of nature:

I know you really like that mod, but I don't see anybody "owning" anybody else, there. Bethesda's art direction is clearly a stylistic choice. You either like it your you don't, but neither approach is "wrong." I think his mod is too colorful, too, regardless of what actual nature looks like.

It's not just colors. His point is that he makes the mod for other people to tweak, and therefore his own settings aren't exactly the best, and people frequently skip over this fact and think that ENBSeries is somehow supposed to make everything look better automatically when really this guy is just giving people the framework for settings of their choosing.

Get the 1.8 package version there. Simply unzip into your Steamapps\Common\Skyrim directory.
Thanks. So by the looks of it, I have to install something else first? Or can I just unzip your file if all I want is the FPS counter?

My Skyrim install is vanilla with the exception of an FOV tweak and enabling self-shading on trees, and changing uGrids to 7 instead of 5.

You put a file (the d3d9.dll) into your skyrim directory (same place as TESV.exe) with a handful of text files that tell it what to do.

When people say 'Pogo's settings' these text files are what they're talking about - if you get his zip file then the settings and the d3d9.dll file are in there.

At that point you have 'installed' the HDR mod and there'll be some (rather ugly) text on the menu screen telling you that. If you ever want to get rid of the mod, just rename or delete the d3d9.dll.

In play, press numpad * to turn on an fps counter and shift f12 to toggle the HDR mod on and off. Not sure if you can have the counter on and the mod off, but I don't see why not.

There's very little downside to the HDR mod, particularly with your flash new rig, so I'd recommend it very strongly. But you can see for yourself.

My current favourite mod is the beautiful (if over-reverbed) cover of the Dragonborn song by Malukah as a replacement for the main menu music. I haven't managed to start the game yet without listening through it at least once.

I honestly did try and find one, but it took more than a couple of minutes so I gave up (and I'm not on my home computer).

    Here you go.

It's incredibly atmospheric with the song and the drifting smoke.

A big part of the problem is that his site is quite hard to read, since it is clear English isn't his native language. Combine that with the fact that people are making mods on top of his mod (the HDR deal) and no one knows which way is up. Threads like this are helpful for clearing that up, but of course not everyone visits here. Visiting the ENBseries page alone is just confusing.

Another of the ways that Skyrim is awesome is it's taught me that I can put tiny files into games like Fallout New Vegas and GTA IV and it will make them look totally awesome without any performance hit. This is an excellent thing.

Seriously - anyone who is wavering on trying the HDR mod, give it a go. The worst that will happen is you'll just delete it.
