And the Kings head to the finals!
And, my, that was an "interesting" game. I really dislike Phoenix.
Very true. During the year, it seems that long breaks with their funky scheduling has hurt them. But so far the longer breaks during the playoffs seem to be helpful. I think it has to do a lot with the increased physicality of the games.
Then again, this is a fan talking.
I just hope now that people in LA will actually figure out that we have a hockey team.
Meanwhile, in Orange County, wasn't there a sizable bandwagon a few years back for the other team -- the Ducks -- with some spillover from Los Angeles County?
Hell, not even did Snoop go to the games, he even went for a skate with the team.
May 25th, 1994. Exactly 18 years ago today.
Let's Go Rangers.
Updated for the modern era:
Bold call by Stu Bickel.
I don't have a horse in this race anymore, but I really hope this goes to 7. Ultimately, would rather see a Rangers/Kings final.
Kings and Devils, game one Wed. I'm pulling for the Kings. Partly because they were the 8 seed and it's a pretty cool story to see them in the Finals. Partly because they've really been the best team in the playoffs so far. But mostly because they aren't from New Jersey.
Wearing my Jonathan Quick shirt at work today. Under 2 hours till puck drop. Seriously as someone who watched the Kings lose the Cup in 93, and the fact that I really think we have a better chance now, well, suffice it to say that I cannot wait to get home to see game 1.
I am looking to see some really good hockey- good old fashioned gritty, rough hockey. I also expect to see a clean game- none of that Phoenix shenanigans that went on. This is where the big boys play, not the whiners.
Go Kings!
Good luck to your boys. It's nice to see that Kings fans really do exist. I'm pulling for them as well, being a huge fan of Mike Richards and Simon Gagne when they were on the Flyers.
Yeah there is definitely a severe lack of fandom for Hockey in LA. Too bad since they are just playing so well and this will most likely be a fantastic series .
Richards has been fantastic to watch for the entire playoffs. I am saddened that Gagne will not be playing due to injury. He is back skating with the team but didn't return until after the playoffs started and with the way the lineups were working, I just think it was too late to make a change like that. On the plus side, if we do win, he gets a ring and he did help get us the the playoffs so there is that.
I was at the Staples Center for game 4 of the LA vs VAN and I was thoroughly impressed by the LA fans. At least in our section, the fans seemed very knowledgeable and passionate (and they really hated all us Vancouver fans there) ;)
Personally, I'm torn between it "being cool" for Brodeur to win another cup and it "being cool" if LA actually won a cup.
I do like the team that beat Vancouver to go on to win the cup...it means we were beat by the Stanley Cup Champions...It has made me feel better before with Chicago and Boston...
First of all I hate you. Ok not really :) I was looking at about 500 bucks for 3 tickets...*sigh*. As for Vancouver fans, heck you guys hate your own team! lol
Well we have 19000 Hockey fans in LA- 18 go to the game, and the other 1000 watch on tv :) And it is a great place to be as a fan when we are winning.
It's the end of an era, though.
Win or lose, I can't see Brodeur going for much longer. I wouldn't mind seeing him win one more and go out on a high note.
Meanwhile, the rumor mill is churning that Nick Lidstrom will announce his retirement tomorrow.
Legends both, and classy guys to boot.
Great end to the game on the Williams pass and as calm a breakaway as you'll see from Kopitar...great to see them steal home ice advantage right away!
That was a great game. Not entirely because the Kings won (that makes it even better) but after watching the Phx/Kings series and what a sub-par hockey effort (I really hate PHX) this first game was just a fun game to watch. Good hits, hard hits, incredible amount of action by 2 teams that really want to win.
And Kopitar made what I think was one of the greatest moments in Kings history last night.
I was the only one cheering on my block after the goal...*sigh*. I bet more people in LA watched the basketball game than hockey.
Agreed, I enjoyed it. The Kings had the higher energy in the first 30 minutes or so, the Devils cranked it up after that, and both teams were going at it tooth and nail at the end of regulation and overtime.
Sad news of the day, as Omni predicted above: Nick is hanging 'em up. It won't be the same wearing my #5 Wings sweater to a game without him on the ice.
I haven't watched hockey in over ten years and I don't even like the Devils, but I have to root for Martin Brodeur. The man won a cup with Neal Broten, for crying out loud! I have no idea how he's still performing at that level out there.
I actually watched a hockey game! Shriek!
And then....MASS RIOTING AROUND STAPLES CENTER!! No, wait, the Lakers are out of the playoffs already. Good to see this city can have a team in the finals without destroying police cars. I saw a few people were arrested, one woman was hit with brass knuckles (???), and the usual drunks caused a few issues but overall everyone seems to have behaved themselves.
Congrats to the Kings for an amazing playoff run and winning their first Cup! My wife got to see her team win so now it's my turn again - go Stars!
I told my son to get the hell out of E3 if the Kings looked like they were going to win game 4. :-)
I mostly watched in honor of my friend, who is a life-long Kings fans (well, since he came to SoCal) and recently beat cancer. The puck still disappears on fast shots on huge hi-def screens....
