Between this and Borderlands 2, its nice to see some developers finally acknowledging that they need to do PC specific UI options.
Those are promising. After the E3 trailer I remarked how gamey the interface looked. It's pretty garish. But we'll have to see if the game is playable with most of the UI disabled.

Is that a thing worth having?
I think Arx Fatalis is a great game. Really liked the gesture-casting of spells and the difficulty level. First Orc I came across just clobbered me. I remember feeling a little embarrassed in the check out line with the game box in hand because the cover featured a rather buxom young lady. I got over it.
More news of the game, this time via RPS. Voice casting, and music:
Susan Sarandon will be playing, er, “Granny Rags”, while the extraordinary Brad Dourif makes mouth noises for inventor Piero, creator of that scary mask worn by the game’s protagonist, Corvo. Slightly more bizarrely, Bethesda inform us that Carrie Fisher “can be heard broadcasting government propaganda over loudspeakers throughout the city of Dunwall, where the game is set.”
Then there’s John “Mad Men” Slattery as Admiral Havelock, and Michael “All Those Movies” Madsen as Daud, a mysterious assassin. Also: Chloë Grace Moretz from Kick-Ass playing “young Lady Emily”, while the incalculably lovely Lena Headey joins the cast as Calista, Emily’s caretaker.
Also the chap who does the score for Dexter, Daniel Licht, is doing the music.
So let me ask my fellow Thief/System Shock fans here: Is this one a no-brainer? Should I be pre-ordering it and looking forward to as the next coming of those other franchises that were so good? I've been trying to not watch any footage for fear of spoilers, and just wanted to get a general read from fellow fans on whether or not this is shaping up to be the next great game in that lineage.
It looks good, very good, but there are some fear that they streamlined / casualized the experience too much. In some videos it really seems very easy thanks to the mana regen, the uber powers, the indicators that help you in the stealth, the xray vision, etc.
It depends of how the game is with the difficulty turned up and with some hud indicators turned off.
It looks good, but it's not going to be like System Shock or Thief. The player is extremely agile, mobile, and powerful. Watching even the sneakier gameplay videos is not really much like painstakingly creeping through a level in Thief, or futilely battering at a zombie in SS.
So it looks like a really cool stealth game, but not really that much like your referents, I guess.
For me it comes down to what's going on in the space between pressing the awesome button like we see in the trailer. Do we know if the levels are sandboxes yet? (I think Zylon or someone called them puzzle boxes.) I prefer uneven, self-directed pace rather than carefully crafted engagement areas with a checklist of ways to approach them.

edit: interesting
My plan was to then harmlessly Blink my way out of the house, but the presence of "Observers" — guards who can nullify all your magic powers — scrapped that plan immediately.

I was kind of surprised at the clarity and precision of the article on the Penny Arcade site. It makes me want to get this game.
Then I realized that it wasn't written by Holkins. And that explains it.
This just shot to the top of my "must get".... During the winter Steam sale.. List.

This game seems to have come out of nowhere for me, even though I know that's not true - I think I read an article about Dishonored in PC Gamer over a year ago. But it didn't register, it just didn't seem distinct enough to stand out in my mind and I have basically ignored it. Until I saw the demo showing how a mission can be accomplished while not only avoiding combat but also avoiding killing anybody. that gets my attention - I don't know if I actually want to play an entire game dodging conflict completely but I love that I may have the option to do so.
I really am looking forward to this, too. Just don't release it until the WHOLE GAME is polished. Do you hear me, Smith and Colantonio?! POLISH THE WHOLE GAME!!!
But I really like the thought of being severely overpowered. I mean, I'm sure there will be some balancing factors, but I love causing major havoc in systems-intensive games and this may be one of the best titles ever for that.
Uh... I don't think you have to scream that at Colantonio or Smith, but to their Bethesda's bosses.

I read that feature by Polygon from a few weeks ago on Smith and Colantonio and the road that lead them to this game. Great, great feature. I really have my hopes up now that this is the next Thief/Deus Ex/Shock style immersive shooter successor.
Looks very imaginative in terms of abilities.
It has an oddly retro feel to it, like a cross between Thief and Bioshock - I guess that's deliberate.
But it also has that old-skool fps thing of making you feel you're about 3 feet high, which I've really gone off.
But definitely interesting. I loved Arx Fatalis - DMoM&M not so much, but Arx was a fine game. I hope they don't make it too action-oriented (a problem with the otherwise excellent Ego Draconis from Larian recently)
The best part of the Thief series for me was the fact that you were weak and easily killed, a fact that really helped the amazing sense of excitement and danger in those games.
BUT here they make you able to kill every person in the map, effortlessly, if the videos are representative of real gameplay.
If you have those kinds of powers the sense of danger is virtually non-existent for me.
Here's hoping you can fine-tune the difficulty settings.
*edit* loved Arx Fatalis btw. Amazing game.
They need to explain how your mana regenerates, if you have unlimited powers that's not going to be fun or challenging. Hopefully on the more difficult settings its a fixed amount with no regeneration.
