The latest expansion rolled out today. I like the new inventory changes but I'm a uber newb so what do I know.

Yeah, some people like it, but there are a lot of power users who find it a downgrade (more clicks to do the same job). The General forum is heating up quite considerably over this.

For the most cogent outline of the problem, see (as usual) Tippia's blog post.

(I sometimes think the devs should just get Tippia to develop the game, as she often seems to understand it to a greater depth and precision than they do. But on the other hand, judging by her smarts, she's probably being paid more for whatever her real job is than CCP could pay her :) )

I thought my station inventory was going to be organized just like the market sidebar would be. Instead of using station containers to categorize things manually I was thrilled when I thought that was going to be done for us. Oh well, I'm still getting used to it either way. I'm not sure if I like it or not yet, but glad to see them working on the small things that could use some work.

I like it when I'm not fighting it. The filtering has huge potential.

Its way too hard to get and keep separate boxes for my Cargo & Wrecks, and the extra mandatory blank space is such a waste.

Still some trouble brewing down't mill on this. I'd say a good quarter of players, maybe even a third, are unhappy with the new UI. However, CCP Soundwave has firmly grasped the nettle and solicited requests for change, a few of which have been implemented quickly, some still to come; however, to this players retort "but we told you in test that and why it needed more work, why did you release it, given that feedback - or didn't you check the feedback?"

I like the new inventory a lot, altho its kinda slow and could use some improvements when looting wrecks, otherwise i think they did a pretty good job with it.

Yeah. When I open a cabinet on my bedroom I donīt expect to see the fridge contents. So when I open a wreck in space, I do NOT want to see what I already have in my cargo. Thatīs just stupid. Other than that, the new inventory is growing on me.

    Nice expensive ship you have.

Shame if a whole bunch of cheap ships should happen to it.

Looking at Killboards, I see that my EVE playtime peaks in winter, and dwindles away in Spring and Summer. Anyone in the Pacific Northwest can make a good guess as to why.

But, last night, since I had a skill change to make anyway, I happened to note we had a big fleet up. I joined, and discovered that we were doing a large fleet of T1 Frigates and Destroyers. For those who keep thinking "if I had joined EVE earlier, I'd be able to participate" these are the "you can be effective in a day" class of ships.

Just while I was flying with it (I wasn't there for the whole fleet), we did a couple of billion ISK in damage. Sure, we lost half or more of the fleet in each engagement, but they were cheap ships, so who cares. 50m ISK in losses for 1b ISK in damage? Trade!

TL;DR: You can try EVE today and be making people cry bitter bitter tears tomorrow!

CCP announced new sub figures for EvE. Now 450,000 subs. 10 years old and counting. Probably the only truly continuously successful MMO on the market. :)

Yeah, that announcement actually got me considering to re-up my subscription, oddly enough.

Dave, would love to fly with you sometime soon. Also on the Pacific Northwest so on evenings to late evenings PST.

Finally setup within JUSTK and on my way toward fitting a small collection of ships for fleet ops. Things should hopefully go more smoothly now that I've made Villore my trade hub of choice. Before this, making ISK to offset losses was a struggle for me but I realized I wasn't utilizing the LP reward market well enough.

So my short term goals after the holidays are:
    1. Get JUSTK fleet ops ships fitted up, with backups of my most used ship types.
    2. Get out there and PVP more, solo or in very small gangs. - I need more pvp experience since I tend to lose more engagements than win. More pvp experience will help me adapt to the situation rather than freeze when 'stuff goes bad'.
    3. Try to get a fleet with Juan. - If only to accidentally sick my drones on him.

What happens to people who had unsubbed while in Wormhole space... in a ship that can't scan? I think my scanning ship was in a can lol.

Not looking to resub, just interested, you know, just in case if in the future....

No I probably really won't. I've resubbed on average once a year since '03 or '04 and the last time with Thorn I think was the best. But it just wasn't, well it was fun but there was too much tedium for the mild levels of enjoyment I had. And that's the way it's always been. However I won't rule out that in the future, maybe a year or two from now, something will have changed that'll bring me back.

Understood. I think with EvE it is very much up to the player to make their own fun and goals. If you aren't attached to a stable active corp it can also be extremely unfun. So much of the content in EvE is player driven.

Does that include China? And is that "subscriptions" or just active accounts?

Not personal experience, but I'd assume your options are:
    - File a petition to have your pod/ship moved to some system, explaining the situation, maybe some GM will look kindly upon you. :D
    - Make nice with whoever is living in there now.
    - Self destruct your pod, wake up somewhere else.

I've having my bi-annual "oh hey I forgot about Eve maybe I should check that out again" thing. I've always loved the concept but much like most of the internet, it's great in theory but when you unleash the assholes of the world upon it they tend to ruin it. I don't mind the scamming and the pirating, etc. If you're dumb enough to get caught in situations like that, it's your own fault. It's more the metagaming. The big battles you see in the trailers never seem to actually happen. It's more a giant lagfest when everyone gets there, or they wait until the Titan pilot logs off to cheesily pick him off instead of there ever being an actual epic battle. I guess none of that could have improved, right?

Does QT3 have a group that plays or what? I have a character who's not a total newb but no idea where I left him in space, or any of his stuff. Sorta wish they'd let old accounts have like a 7 day trial on the new expansion for free or something. Argh!

Eric, just do what many, MANY people do and read about the game rather than playing it.

I played from Beta in 2003 to 2004 religiously, and returned for a month or two most years up until 2010 - but the last time I actually had 'fun' in game was probably 2004. I still like reading about it and following (in general) what's happening.

Honestly, I think the gameplay is stale now and even when you're playing it, most of the fun comes from metagaming actions anyway :P

It includes China (they are an important part of the gaming world, and they do pay a subscription for EVE), and it is subscriptions, but I'm not sure I understand the use of scare quotes there.

Full disclosure: I run PR for CCP and wrote that press release. :)

I've been kinda in the same boat for a while. I keep getting interested in returning, but no idea who to play with. EVE is nowhere near as much fun alone.

There's a big difference between paid subscriptions and active accounts and many companies have announced XXX subscribers but actually meant XXX active accounts.

Full disclosure: I don't know what scare quotes are :(

There are many Qt3 peeps in Eve, but we are farily spread out in different corps and regions of space. There IS a Qt3/Broken Forum channel (long ago named Qt3 so Join!) and some of us do faction warfare, pvp corp JUSTK on the Gallente side.

I completely disagree, there are nowadays several entirely "viable" and fun paths available to players for PvP (and even PvE is slowly getting better).

The (very) recent ships rebalance and several small-scale improvements have also significantly shaken things up.

Agreed, Eve alone (especially PvE) is a dreadful experience. Having said that, several large well-known corps exist nowadays catering to pretty much every playstyle and welcoming new (and older) players. Eve uni is one, RvsB, if you have a reddit or SA account (which I expect you have ...) then Bort or Goonswarm + a large number of less well-known corps.

Or, even, potentially, our very own JUSTK corp ...

Believe it or not but most corps in eve are actually desperate to recruit "sane", normal people to have fun with!

Eve is not a magic land, in some aspects it is actually _too close_ to real life (i.e. you will meet some nasty and annoying people) but that means that most RL rules apply too: if you want to play with other people (which you do!) you just need to go forward, meet like-minded people, join them and have fun with them.

There's even an ingame tool nowadays to see who is recruiting or not.

Eve's actual gameplay isn't very fun. As was described almost 10 years ago, the gameplay (even in pvp) has more similarities to spreadsheets in space than it does to a space sim/shooter. The fun in PVP was always
    1)The risk of losing
    2)Destroying other peoples' stuff
    3)Winning
but the mechanics of gameplay themselves even in 2003 were pretty poor. 9 years on and they've definitely gotten stale!

It was the anti planetside when it came out, where Planetside had ridiculously fun gameplay but had absolutely no metagame. As you can see, EVE definitely came out better than PS :)

Once again I disagree, I have plenty of fun fighting in frigs/dessies and shooting things. The long-term interest in Eve comes from the consequences part.

OTOH, I don't see how we can really have a productive discussion given you haven't played for 2 years and obviously made up your mind already.
What is the name of your character in eve?

    Shoot people, repeatedly!
Also roleplay as saviors of the federation, liberating worlds oppressed by the evil corporate culture of the Caldari State! (not really)
