Also how are people seeing other High scores? My table is made up of just my own.
Yeesh, that was a brain fart on my part.

Woo my character I just killed off (because in a few it's going to be incompatible and I don't have time to play right now) is in 2nd place on my friend's leaderboard! :)

Also the achievements are bugged? I've definitely done some of those things and don't have credit for them.

It's all good. I started to add a "IMO" or "to me" to that post, but it didn't seem nearly as amusing. I think it is really a case of how you like to play. When I think of playing a game like this, it isn't about zipping around the dungeon at high speed. I like a more methodical game.

Look at it from this perspective: to me the environment is just another big, bad, boss monster. Auto negotiating traps sounds as strange to me as auto-negotiating monsters would. Spotting the trap is only part of dealing with them.

But that's one of the cool things about the genre, isn't it? There are so many cool ways of styling it for people with different tastes.

    In the new patch notes:

    - Steam Overlay now works; run the game with “-opengl” as a parameter in the Steam Advanced settings to try this. (This is experimental.)
    Yay!

This game is terrific - and perfect for lunch breaks!

Also I'm freaking TERRIBLE at it - my high score is 1600 or something, and I've only broken above 600 points that one time. Ugh. But I do have fun every time!

It's only perfect for lunch breaks because you're dying in the first 45 minutes! Hehe.

The "It Tastes Like Pennies" achievement got a LOL out of me. A Shawn Elliot reference I believe?

There was a Family Guy episode that said something tastes like pennies. It was the Hands that Rocks the Cradle episode. Don't Google "tastes like pennies".

Some general advice I posted on another forum:

Slow down, don't approach it like an action game
Food seems to be fairly plentiful. Eat some if you need to.
Avoid getting hit by more than one monster whenever possible. Back away if needed. Remember monsters can't attack you diagonally.
Learn to recognize when you are in trouble (when death could be a turn or two away)
If you are in trouble, use items like wands. They won't help you if you are dead.

YES! I don't even care if that was my suggestion that made them do it or not. :D

Thanks! All good advice, for sure. I know I'm rushing through too fast, and I tend to forget my consumables, so I'll try and slow it down and be less stingy when it comes to item use.

Yep. The biggest key is to use everything at your disposal because saving it will only get you deader. That was a hard roguelike lesson for me to learn. I am a hoarder and end up filling my inventory (and bank if there is one) with all manner of things in every game I play. Getting in the habit of using stuff will free up some inventory space, too. I am still bad about conserving arrows.

If anyone wants to add me to Steam so we can compare scores or whatever, here is my Steam ID: Contrai01.

Also, what difficulty is everyone mostly playing? I started off on Dwarven (Non-Perma) and am currently playing Dwarven (Perma). Can anyone who has played both Dwarven and the Going Rogue difficulties comment on how much harder Going Rogue is between the two difficulties? Thanks.

I read an amazing column about Shiren the wanderer that totally changed how I played. I alluded to it above, but basically there are going to be many life or death moments in a game like this. The odds are against you in the long run as the number of those moments increases. Even if getting a hit on your next attack means it will die, what could happen if you miss. Eventually you WILL miss. That's the thing to understand. So when you recognize a situation like that, look at every possible play you have. Don't leave a consumable unused that could have saved you.

Yeah, pretty much. Never trust the RNG in a game with permadeath. Ever. Because it hates you.

Thanks, it looks like I'll stay in Dwarven Moderation difficulty for awhile then =)

I'm hoping they work on the difficulties some as currently Dwarven Moderation is almost boring it can be so easy minus certain zoo adventures. Really the advice to just plod along and be careful will keep you alive for ages. Yet I've tried making a decent character on Going Rogue 10 times in a row this morning and quickly splatted as something as simple as a room of 3+ mobs is certain death.

Agreed. Health regen on Hard is brutal enough early game that it encourages regen-scumming way, way too much. Yet Medium isn't dangerous enough for 90% of the game.

Would it be this article (specifically, Part 2), written by John Harris for his @Play column at GameSetWatch? If not, that is still a good article, and I would recommend that anyone interested in roguelikes (newbies or veterans) look through the archives for that column and read whatever articles catch your eye.

Realize that what you are saying is that medium is fairly manageable if you are smart, careful, and understand the principles of this kind of game I'm ok with that, personally. I don't especially want to do everything right and still get destroyed repeatedly. That said, I do think medium could be a little tougher but I wouldn't want dramatic changes.
