I was a late Steam adopter, but had to if I wanted to do the Hinterland Beta. I liked opening a box and flipping through a manual. The resistance on the Tilted Mill forums was HUGE!!! The acceptance has been slow as is evidenced by your experience dbaum. At the time, I had bought maybe 3 online games and they were all tiny, direct purchases from developers. Haven't looked back. Between the sales and the ease of clicking as opposed to having to let go of a credit card at the register, I just find myself with more games.

Heck, I have bought games I am not going to be able to play until my new PC shows up. Dredmor being on Steam is perfect for a lot of us, obviously. As you say, the positives far outweigh the negatives. It is going to allow so much more PC development that may not have occurred and those indie games are going to reach far, far more people.

Unfortuantely, due to the steam summer sales, you will have to wait for my 5 dollars /Euroes.

I'll wait for a non-Steam version. I will get this if there's a non-Steam version. I can wait a few months if needed.

People talk shit about Steam because it's hipster to hate it.

Personally I'm thrilled you're going with Steam first.

Well I'm glad it's on Steam. Not sure what's up with Steam Haters, but to each their own.

Dbaum, will there be DRM on non-Steam versions? Neither Impulse nor Gamersgate add DRM, unlike Steam (which is why I prefer those two services).

    Lorini:
We're not interested in any sort of heavy handed DRM stuff at all, and so far as I know a lot of that is up to the developer/publisher rather than a requirement of Steam. It's certainly not in our interest to make playing Dredmor a pain in the ass for players, and the game is going to get pirated no matter what we do.

Anyway, yes, we're going to set things up with a bunch of different distributors, there's no exclusivity, and this will be sooner than a matter of "months", I should think.

    Tyjenks:
Ah, boxed games. It's a pity those stopped being any good once they all switched to plastic DVD case type things. I love all those old manuals, particularly from Maxis in the 90's.

But yeah, I stopped buying PC games in-store a long time ago - I think the last one I got was Victoria, and that was a bit of a fluke ("You mean they're selling a game in here with Queen Victoria on the cover? I don't know what this is, but I need to have it!"). The PC section kept getting smaller and crappier and shoved into a corner, then just one shelf ... ah, such are the economics of games nowadays.

When we all get our 3D reality printers, one of the options when you buy a game online will be to "print" out the box complete with manual and disks, so you can stack it on your shelf.

Off-topic for Dredmor, but this 3D printing related vid popped up on my Boxee front page a few days ago, thought it was awesome!

Sweet! I hope there are separate leaderboards for permadeath and non-permadeath.

Being a hipster, I look forward to getting it from somewhere other than Steam. Can't wait actually. Looks like the perfect coffee break game :)

...And on that day, millions of Steam users were permanently banned from the service, for the great crime of acting as if they actually owned the stuff they'd bought & paid for.

I don't want a single person to whine about how they are going to hold off after the Steam Summer Sale for a measly $5. I know a Steam release will already help the game tremendously, but so will getting it up on the Top Sellers list early and for several days. So stop complaining before you start, bastards.

EDIT: I hope there is a Group or Friends only leaderboard. Losing to you guys will be much more fun.

Everyone just shut up and give me my game. How come this feels like the most exciting game for months?

p.s. I knew these Canadians would pull some sort of subliminal mind game thingy with the release. *shakes fist*

Week of Dredmor blog posts to celebrate the game! Not sure why I'm looking forward to it so much since I got to dick around with the beta so it's a known quantity, but I'm looking forward to playing it again anyway. I'll have to prosthelytize some roguelike-playing Steam buddies into snagging copies too so we can battle on leaderboards.

At $5, I'll do it just to support an Indie. Probably would do it for $10, but the overload of games folks have from the Summer Sale definitely does have an impact on impulse buying.

I didn't buy anything during the Steam sale in the hopes my eyebrows would be fortified.

Maybe if we're one of the first 500 to download it, they could include armor for our horse's eyebrows too!

I will buy this on Steam on Wednesday and expect my special edition eyebrow armor, unlockable with a 72-character special code that cannot be copy-pasted.

Also, so I have the option to blame Tyler if I don't like it.
