For the most part, this goes double for me. (Except the part about playing on Easy). Wuss. ;)
I believe David said a few pages back, "Not with this game. Maybe the next". Flip back a couple and he gives abbreviated reasoning.
Again, dbaum has said that once all the publishing was cleared up, they would talk at length about all of their publishing and pricing decisions so stay tuned. They have been very frank and open in their blog posts about their development processes up until they had to clam up until the Steam deal was finalized.
Yay! And two days before a long overseas trip as well, even better.
While it's been a long time since I tried DCSS, each time I played it I came away with the feeling that it's lacking... soul. It just feels mechanical to me, and the admittedly optional auto-explore just adds to this. Dredmore can't hope to match the depth of DCSS but it certainly does have soul, personality and for me that vital ingredient that makes me want to play it.
That said, the updates to DCSS of late look pretty cool. I'll give it another shot.
Excellent, they shall have my money...oh yes...they shall...
Steam...*sigh*...Terreria and now this. Why can't you take my money directly Gaslamp...WHY! :sadface.gif:
Good luck, guys!
Will this be included in Steam's summer sale? Because...you know...I would like to save a few bucks.
The reason the game isn't coming out till the 13th is because of the Summer Sale:

Pretty good explanations of the business reasoning for some of their decisions.
For those not into reading and shit, they do intend to distribute it via other channels. Just Steam was the best place to get started.
Made me wince though to realize it's being realized after the gluttony that is the Steam Summer Sale. I just picture thousands of gamers laid out on their backs with distended bellies, groaning under the weight of their excessive indulgences.
I know I plan to reserve room for Dredmor, even if I have reenact Monty Python's waifer thin mint skit.
If the Gaslamp lads manage to keep a nice update schedule like Terraria (every 2 weeks or so) I'm guessing the sales will ramp up.
Anyway, planning on buying 4 copies, secretly hoping that the extra cash will be reason enough for DofD to soon be featuring more classes/races/pretty pixels. :)
Next few weeks are crazy for me:
DW Gundam 3 this week, EDF next week, then Dredmor, then Bastion on the 20th, and Runespell is supposed to be late July...not to mention the usual app store insanity. Too much stuff, but so much awesome stuff.
Gaslamp will be happy to know that I have not spent a dime on the Steam summer sale yet, in anticipation of the the launch of Dredmor.
It has nothing to do the fact I already own every game I am interested in that has been on daily special, I swear.
They better not use regional pricing or I'll write them a nasty mail. :P
My new computer is coming on release day and what better use for it!!!
I bet Dredmor will tax those dual GTX590's to their limit! :)
Between this, Spectromancer and Realm of the Mad God, I sure hope I don't burn the thing up in the first week.
Is it actually that Steam won't post new games during the sale, or is it just "too many distractions"? I know I'd be happy to pay my $5 right now, but I can certainly wait to the 13th, too.
I gotta say, thanks for all the support and kind words all, it's just amazing :)
Regarding the Steam sale and Dredmor launch date: Yeah, the thinking was that Dredmor would get lost in all the noise. And we certainly wouldn't want to delay even more.
As for pricing and region, I have no bloody clue - we've just agreed on the one $4.99 number which is in USD. If there were a decision to be made on Gaslamp's side, we'd obviously go for whatever was most fair.
Distribution with Valve is non-exclusive, so after* this Steam launch - which is about the best single shot deal we could have possibly gotten for maximum impact and credibility on launch - we're investigating other distribution deals for player's who don't use Steam. (I'm not implying that we're contractually obligated to launch on Steam first - it's just the first deal we've got set, and it makes sense to make it as big as possible.)
Weirdly, a *ton* of Steam-haters have come out of the woodwork and informed us about how disappointed they are that we're using Steam; I never knew such anti-Steam sentiment existed after they sorted out most of their stability issues from early on. I do understand most of the objections, though I don't personally object to them enough to not use Steam. (A few have centred on the alleged mistreatment of some indie game devs by not following up distribution deals eg. Din's Curse, but I'm not sure that's a substantial argument to make against a private distribution system; also this might be a conversation for another thread.)
... anyway, I think we'll be fine. It's a dream come true for an indie game developer releasing their first title.
And no, we're not in a big hurry to do direct sales. It'd take a good deal of effort and infrastructure which distributors like Steam handle for us and it definitely wouldn't have been the right strategy for launching the game at its price. Post-launch we'll certainly do some more in-depth writeups on our design/business/pricing strategy -- have to see if it works first!
As for Super Secret additions to the game, Nicholas and I have today marked off to do the UI for a mod loader in the startup widget to make mod distribution and management quite simple.
I for one am totally fine with a first crack at Steam. I use it, I'd want to buy the game there, s'all good. I am very much in favor of the digital distribution market stopping with exclusivity bullshit, however, so hopefully you will find other workable partners.
