It's just disappointing that when they do show up they are... the villains from Mass Effect.
That's just one part of the backstory. You're ignoring everything else about each of the other races and their histories to pick on this one point.

This is a day 1 purchase for me, but let's be fair, that backstory is lifted almost whole from the Mass Effect series. Which, still, is cool, since it's a good one, and Mass Effect is a rail shooter and this is a great 4x RTS.
Search in the forum, around 2007 when ME was released i called it "Generic Sci-Fi: the RPG". Mass Effect plot (and also side plots) is a compendium of cliches and scifi tropes by itself.

Argh. I just saw the system reqs and realized I'm going to have to upgrade my kid's GPU if he's going to play this thing (he's running an old 8600GTS ... on a quad-core, 6GB system so I'm not entirely cheap). Ah, well.

PS - hey, does anyone have a spare 460GTX floating around collecting dust? ;)

Ughhh... i hate when people have unbalanced systems. Have chepar low powered computers, or high end computers, but having a quad core with 6GB with a 8600? You criminal!

The needle on my anticipation meter for this game is pretty much buried. It's bound to be somewhat of a let-down from the picture I have in my head (main areas of worry are AI and UI oddities), but I'm pretty confident that I will be obsessed with it.

Heck, I've lately become obsessed with the original... again. I think I need to clone myself so that I'll have the time I want to play video games...

Yeah, yeah - guilty as charged, LOL. Originally, the PC was a refurb Gateway with only on-board video. Sadly, his case couldn't fit my old 8800GTX plus he wasn't wanting (at the time) any high powered games. Now ... well, yeah. Looks like I'm going to be dropping a few bucks. *sigh*

This report gets me even more excited about the game.

Release date is now sometime in October, shooting to have it out before Canadian Thanksgiving. I appreciate Kerberos' desire to run a closed beta prior to release and Paradox' willingness to fund it, but man... The wait on this game is killing me!

In a way I am glad, since I actually have to get some projects off my plate before this game eats my life.

Yea, I'm basing the October release date on the Paradox page as well as Mecron's (Kerberos owner / lead designer) comments on their forum. They'd like to have everything wrapped up by Canadian Thanksgiving which is second week of October i think?

The delays are fine with me. Between other games releasing the next month or so, I don't expect to have time for this anyway.

Wooo! One more month to go, and I've got about 4 weeks of vacation to take by the end of the year. Serendipitous!

Has anyone seen any video of tactical combat? They are so close to release but I’ve not seen a single demonstration of combat, which to me seems the biggest area of change/improvement from the original.

There was some footage from the PAX gathering but not a lot. Kerberos seems to like to keep a lot under their hats until release. For example, Admirals are supposed to play a major role in the game but almost nothing is known about them.

The best video is probably here
    http://angryjoeshow.com/2011/09/sots...athering-2011/

There's a battle (featuring a leviathan, the new huge ship class) at about 6:30. The armor/damage interface looks very cool.

The opening cinematic has some in-engine combat scenes, if you are willing to look past the sometimes-goofy animation in the other parts.

I sure hope they found a way to improve fleet maintenance as that was a pain in the first game.
