I would definitely gear up in the jungle/elsewhere before tangling with fire imps.
Tips for bypassing/defeating fire imps? I dug straight down to their level on a small SP map and have killed a few, but at great cost. I'm only up to silver armor and a gold sword. I've almost enough gold for gold armor, but I have a feeling I'll need even better gear.

Yeah dude, hitting fire imps with that gear (same gear as mine atm) means STOP.
Heh, thanks guys. I've been staying away from guides and wikis, so for some reason I figured I'd have to get through them to get to the good stuff. I just peeked into a wiki and realized that exploring horizontally above The Underworld is a good next step.
Yeah at the point where you have some gold stuff and you're wondering what you're supposed to progress to is the point where you need to consider summoning your first boss.
Don't bother with the imps until you have the demonic or cobalt armor. Basically with the imps and those meteor things I do not bother to kill. I just have decent armor so their fireballs do not hurt so bad and occasionally suck down a healing potion. I just mine the ore and ignore them as much as possible.
The reason is, that you may kill them, but 5 seconds later more show up so its pointless. Its one of the things about this game that pisses me off. The constant inundation of monsters; It never really stops.
Once you get gold armor and sword, I would suggest finding the jungle. Use that map tool that shows you a map of the world to find the jungle. Once in the jungle collect the roses and the stingers until you can make that thrown weapon and the vine upgrade for your grappling hook. Once you got that thrown weapon, farm some monsters. There is a very low chance to get some cobalt armor. You will kill 100s of these critters. On the good side, you will make a lot of coin if you care about that.
From there use your jungle thrown weapon to kill the eye boss if you like, then use your gold to buy dynamite to "dig" to some shadow orbs. Kill 1 orb at a time and wait for the meteor to fall. If you kill 2 or more orbs before a meteor falls, you will only get 1 meteor.
On the third shadow orb, as soon as you kill it, the devourer of worlds will appear. Be ready for it. I normally create a wide platform above the orb I can get to fast with plenty of room to move. If you found that spear weapon that uses mana (and if you have some cobalt armor) you can easily kill him and avoid the segments. Here will drop more demon ore and the shadow scales which are required to make the armor and pick and all that.
Once you got a nightmare pick you can harvest obsidian and make an orb. Whatever pieces of cobalt armor you are missing, replace this with demon armor. You can continue to shatter orbs and every 3rd one will give you another devourer to kill. At this point you can run down to where the imps are and start trying to mine hell ore. You will also need a lot of obsidian to smelt it.
Hrm, after reading that I realize I got some message after breaking the first orb. Am I supposed to look for a meteor? I'm guessing I need to search the whole surface?
If you don't want to 'cheat', the other way is to locate your Dungeon entrance on the surface. Don't enter, 'cause you'll probably die. The Underground Jungle is on the opposite side of the map, close to the edge. So head over there and dig down, down, down...Use that map tool that shows you a map of the world to find the jungle.
Yep, but I am not sure you can do much when you find it unless you have an Obsidian Skull (to prevent burn damage) and Demoite pickaxe (to actually mine the ore). You can probably mine it with dynamite...Hrm, after reading that I realize I got some message after breaking the first orb. Am I supposed to look for a meteor? I was planning to buy dynamite, yes.
Not like this 34g is going to be useful spent on anything else right now. Though I have killed the Eye so I forgot that I need to build another room for the next NPC to come.
Anyone know if there are a set number of floating islands per map size? I have 2 on a small map. I guess I could use a map viewer, but I want to avoid that for a while longer.
Also, getting like 150-200 gold blocks from breaking down a floating island building is seriously awesome. Can't wait to build a city of gold...or at least a small house.
Edit: Now if only we could break gold bricks back down into gold bars...

Anyone up for some multiplayer today / this weekend? Finally got everything up and running so I can get online :)
Sure, who's hosting?
I don't know, but seems most maps have 2 or 3. I have never seen a map with 1, or more than 3 isles.
If you want more isles-related loot, you can count the relative height of a isle. Say... 120 blocks. Then spawn a new world, and walk until you are on a area with "normal" height. It will be easier with the item that shows deep. Then use a 120 blocks stack to build a column, and from there, built a rail of blocks in any direction until you find a isle.
Other people use tecniques like shotting with a gun, and seeing if the bullets return.
If you don't feel like cheating, you could use a mapmaker to see the exact location.
I would, but my machine can't seem to handle running the server and a second copy so I can play at the same time. There's that one server that everyone from here has been playing on, but I don't know how much of it has been looted out already...
Morberis' server is the one I think but I'm not sure if I can give out the IP.
I'm DrJonezMD on Steam if you'd like to add me.
I'm on Morberis' a bit, though it's usually just me and MrCoffeez. I headed west with plans to build a tree house but noticed someone blew a gigantic hole in one of the hilltops. I have no idea how they even accomplished that, because the dirt wall outline of the hilltop is still there.
Also, the more I play the more I'm sort of annoyed with how much the game copies from Minecraft. Did they really have to make an inventory where you had to select a potion to use it and then go back to selecting a weapon? Seriously, in a game like this, I want to map hotkeys. It's basic functionality that Notch failed at and these guys are carrying on. It makes no sense.
I still recommend dynamite thought. You're much more likely to get those damn flying heads to stop spawning before they eat you or annoy you to death.
"No group or player records were found matching your search terms."
Maybe we need something more public then? Doesn't the server support passwords?
A-fucking-men.
On meteor mining, I try to keep all the meteorheads on one side of me while mining, that way the run into my pick and bounce off.
Yeah that was odd. Finding the islands by using in-game mechanics isn't cheating. Using a mapmaker... that's definitely cheating.
But it's Teiman so he might have completely changed the context of his post in the last sentence... or he was implying that making new worlds just to find floating isles and farming gold blocks would be cheating.
It was a typo error, sorry.
Hahaha...
The mapper option is the better. The map in this game is too big to poke blindly around. Also you don't want a big platform floating over the map, because meteors will strike then, and you will get only a few blocks of meteorite.
It's probably just his magic top hat talking.
I went ahead and did a mapviewer of my world, and comparing it to other world images it seems like a floating island is nearly guaranteed to be above the dungeon, though this may just be a side effect of the programmed spacing of floating islands.
There's also one nearly right above my home. Cool.
Also, I didn't realize the jungle was so WTFHUGE
Yeah im in the jungle in Morberis' server right now and all in there hurts :(
I have a White Phaseblade and the Demonite Bow so I am probably going to go in there to kick some ass.
After dying a few times i managed to build myself an Ivy Whip, guess ill have to go back there when i get my space gun.
