I guess I need to dig deeper. I got bored before I made it out of dirt. I was hoping later on I'd find some kind of elevator or two way-teleporter to speed up the trips but I guess not.
After starting a new world with an established character who has 6 gold, 54 silver and 54 copper, I can't get anyone beyond the guide to show up. What gives? This is my only building -- do I need to build more?

Each room needs a door, a table, a chair, and a light source. Looks like you at least need more doors. I don't know if platforms as floors causes a problem or not.
in order to be consider a room, it needs to be 12 wide 6 height and have door, chair, table and light source.
and platform doesn't count as a floor.
Nice.
Speaking of things that don't seem to be working....I am doing something wrong because I cannot set my bed As the respawn point.
Making potions is a bit too cheap, IMO.
I swear I have a platform as a floor and got the merchant and demolitionist to show. I could be missing something though.
I was having problems with my bed as well. The first few times I used it, it worked just fine and the spawn point change message was issued. Later, it stopped working at all with no messages. This morning, I read on the wiki that there needs to be a minimum space of 12 blocks wide and 6 blocks high. I hadn't moved the bed, but a platform ladder was added nearby, so maybe the platforms interfered with the minimum space requirement. I'm going to remove them tonight and see if that fixes it.
Cool. Thanks Peter.
I'll try that, too. I wonder if there is something similar causing problems with NPCs showing.
For a valid bed, the minimum that works for me is 12 wide and 5 high, including exterior walls/floor/ceiling (10x3 interior space). None of the usual "house" requirements seem to be necessary (char, table, lights, complete back wall). If I reduce the width via a wall or a platform ladder, the bed stops working. Interestingly, a single platform (not a complete ladder) doesn't interfere with the bed.
The merchant finally showed up during renovation. Thanks for the tips, guys.

So platforms for part of your floor is okay - just not the entirety?
And for the merchant to appear do you have to have the money on you or can it be in a chest?
How do you build the ladders? I understand that it's with wooden platforms, but I can't get one platform to stay in the air above another. It just won't let me place it.
If there's a wall in the background, you should be able to hang them in the air. If not, they have to attach to a block.
I am once again stuck at this game. I was advised to kill orbs presumably to get meteors to get the metal from them. I have been off looking for orbs, and without fail every single one of them is behind a bunch of rock that my golden pick can not dig. Am I very unlucky or are there actual orbs somewhere that are not behind impenetrable rock?
I know there is some other metal that I am probably missing. I know one drops from boss monsters, if I need that, which boss is the easiest one to kill?
All the orbs I have seen are behind that rock. There are two ways to deal with it before you have a pick that can mine them.
1. Dynamite.
2. Defeat a boss to get the dryad, who sells purification powder which can turn that rock into regular stone.
Easiest boss to beat is the giant eye. Kill flying eyes until you have 10 lenses. Take them to a demon forge to make the suspicious eye. Use the eye at the start of night to summon the boss, preferably near your spawn point. Have plenty of potions and shuriken and you should have no problems.
You say that now, I say they take too long to farm. Seriously I am always out, I need to eat them like candy if I want to go to hell or fight bosses. After you get all the mushrooms that spawn when you gen a world it also takes alot longer for them to show back up, so you can make way less. Without potions like candy the difficulty and time to get back would be wayy too frustrating.
What do stars do? I picked a couple up.
When you acquire 10, you can craft a mana crystal that will give you 20 mana when used.
And what is mana used for?
Spells and items that use mana :p
So is there a QT3 server for this or not? :(
Nothing officially official but I have one that people jump onto every once in awhile. Unfortunately due to the prolificacy of our operations we're out of corruption orbs and meteors.
In fact I'm wondering Mr Coffee and Idrisz if we shouldn't pack things up and just move over to a small world?
Yeah, a multi-player game would help with getting past this stuff. This whole quest to upgrade started because of that flying eye kept killing me and I couldn't do anything about it. I have some dynamite, maybe 3 sticks. Is it placed and is the explosion radius really big? I don't want to waste it trying to get through a wall that is too thick.
I'd offer to host a server, but running the server and then the second instance for myself really brings my computer to a crawl. Not the fastest machine but I've got a 2.4GHZ dual core, kinda surprised it requires so much power.
You throw it, then run like hell. You really need to come at them from above for this to work. Radius is reasonably large - say a two-storey house? (Hang on, that's diameter). Two sticks should clear the way, if the second doesn't do the job itself.
Saving those jungle supplies really paid off; there's a couple of excellent items one can craft. Look Ma, I'm Doc Ock!
