It's definitely going to be interesting to see it in action! What's not so heartening is that id has basically hired people into a job called "Stampers". Their job is to stamp detail into the world. That's a ton of extra work that I wonder if many companies would be willing to take on...

Yeah, I've noticed, I would get annoyed at the texture pop-in on some unreal games. The first Mass Effect, and the second Gears of War really stood out for me on this. I'd hit a cutscene in GoW2 that was a close up, and there it would go, *pop* *pop* *pop* as it loads in the higher res textures.

It sounds like the way to go for Rage will be with a Solid State drive and a PC for me. I only have a 20gb hard drive for my 360, so it's not even an option to install it.

I dunno, so many places in life have the equivalent of repeated textures. Just about any office building, mall, etc. I guess it just doesn't bug me, but we'll see, maybe after playing Rage, I'll notice it more when playing other games.

Sure, I don't mind repeated textures when you're replicating a real-life place that also uses repetitive designs. Obviously, a stucco wall looks like every other stucco wall.

Where it really stands out to me are the instances of asymmetrical patterns like cracked and busted walls, or peeling paint. The RAGE video showing "The Well" gameplay has a great example. There's a part where the player is dogding back and forth between old worn concrete pillars which really stands out. In another game, I would definitely notice the pillars looking the same because they're supposed to be randomly busted up.

Bioshock and Bioshock 2 on the Xbox 360 were also guilty of this.

It's more to do with the outdoor scenes I think. When you're playing a game with wide-open outdoor spaces with lots of natural forms (mountain-sides and grassy plains, for example), you do notice the repeating textures and RAGE looks like it's going to have lots of wide vistas.

GTA4 could be murder for it as well. That game also had sometimes-awful scenery pop in - there were times when I was playing it where I'd be barreling down a street in a car and suddenly the car would stop moving. Nico would go through the windscreen and a couple of seconds later a building would appear.

Bah tech. I'll notice it for the first twenty minutes. Let's get to the fragging! I will admit blatant repeated textures do bother me, but IDC if we finally have a new shooter were I'm moving at a game appropriate speed(50mph) and blowing people into red colored chunks. Cover? BAH! stealth? BAH! I'm so ready for a new oldschool style shooter.

If only there was a decade's worth of games just like that, that you could play. If only...

Yes, they should have obviously stopped making good games a decade ago.

In others news, in the Q&A he said the pc version will use the Nvidia CUDA tech to do the transcoding of the textures.

I also saw mentioned he is considering a release of a HiRez texture pack for PC, probably similar to how Crysis 2 got DX11 highrez pack.

    I'd like that. :)

Me too. I don't know how much replay-ability Rage will offer. I'm almost tempted to put it on the back burner until the texture pack is released, or alternatively a confirmation that it ain't going to happen.

I think they don't know what is going to happen. The don't know how it will be the final ps3 version, they were in talks with Sony about the amount of install size they can get with.

And the pc version, Carmack said he hoped to tweak the pc version graphics until the end, thanks to the lack of certification and the fast distribution in pc (Steam). About the HiRez texture pack, he said something like release only a level like a graphical showoff, but i hope they release a big 50GB torrent with all the game content in high resolution.

People at work were joking they should just release the game on pre-installed hard drives, especially when it comes to the Xbox360.

Instead, Rage's multiplayer support is entirely cooperative; you can play on nine maps, built from locations in the single-player game, in which two players -- each with two lives -- rack up points.
Another loss for the COOP Gamers out there.... :-(

At least the single-player should be bangin'.

On the one hand, I was looking forward to Rage. On the other hand now I can wait until it drops in price.

I'm pretty sure they've been explicit that the coop content is additional ancillary stuff that "fills in gaps in the singleplayer storyline" rather than the full campaign long before now.

Probably, but I found out when I read that article. And it still sucks, regardless of how long ago it might have been announced. :-)

At least Steam doesn't advertise it as coop as they've done on some titles that have offered the same type of "co-op".

I think you should be thankful there is a coop mode in first place. The main game is the single player experience, i would say, but they know pure single player games doesn't sell like blockbusters. You know how the actual big blockbusters have the "complete bullet point list in the back of the box". They have to feature single player, multiplayer, and coop modes, even if the game concept was a sp adventure with concrete start and end. That's why Infinity Ward added the specOps coop mode in MW2, because having sp and competitive mp isn't "enough" anymore, that's why Ubisoft added the mp in AC2 sequel and that's why EA added the horrible MP in Dead Space 2. I think that's why id added the coop mode and the combat rally mode.

So, i am just saying: 9 levels is better than 0. And if it's something polished and fun, instead of being badly tacked on the game, then it's a definitive win.

BTW, there is an interview in gametrailers with Tim Willits where i learned something new about Rage development: they tried to put a cover system in the game! They even implemented 3 different systems, trying to see what it works. In the end, they decided it slowed down the rhythm of the game too much, and dropped it.

But any game that throws it in as filler doesn't really benefit from it. I mean, is anyone playing Bioshock 2 multiplayer?
