    I'm sick of Kazaa...

...and for some reason Morpheus doesn't work on my system. What should I be using instead?

    Neo or Trinity maybe?

Okay, I admit I don't have the slightest idea what folks are talking about on this forum all the time. Can't we have the C64 back? John Dvorak would like that, too!

Hi Gary. I should warn you against downloading music, if you do. I've heard and read horror stories of people being sued by the music industry for large sums of money. (I believe on the order of 100K per song.) And they're not just going after those that download a large amount of files either. The're going after people like a vengence that reminds me of Nazi Germany. In fact, there are people waiting in lines to have their cases heard.

Its sharing files that will get you into trouble.

So you're saying you can download all you want and you're safe as long as you don't share?

Pretty much. Think about it. The only way they're going to know if you're downloading files is if you download a file from a computer that they're watching. Even then, they can't force everyone to download files from them.

Finding people sharing files though, is easy. Type a song into Kazaa, look at the people sharing the file, do a "find files shared by user", see how many files they've got, subpoena the ISP, get the user info at that IP, and off you go.

Of course, they probably automate the whole process, but you get the idea.

The goal is to scare people into not share files, thereby reducing the utility of P2P networks to pirate music.

Hmmm, I don't know if "pretty much" safe is good enough. If I thought there was no risk, then . . .

Shareaza (http://www.shareaza.com) is pretty good. It's a client for Gnutella, Edonkey, it's own protocol (Shareaza calls it Gnutella2, but that pisses off the Gnutella folks) and BitTorrent.

Gary, if you want something that works out-of-the-self-extractor and has a logical UI, get the emule client. There's lots of porn and assorted swag to be found on the edonkey 2000 network.

    http://www.emule-project.net/

    p.s. -
The full-length porn titles have an index at www.sharereactor.com. For less mainstream "titles", send your query through the Emule search interface.

I am using KazaaLite K++ 2.43. Works great and has protection from trackers and other questionnable hosts.

Of course if you are searching for porn then type in specific actors names instead of generic searches. That way you will avoid all that awful German porn and other crap.

Hey, it's not like there was anything sexual about... Erm. Actually, scratch that.
